Last votes are being cast for the charities in the Chase Community Giving Challenge, an online contest sponsored by J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, on Facebook.
Finalists in the first round of the contest, which ends Dec. 11, will earn grants in excess of $25,000, and the top vote-getter will win $1 million to support its work.
An advisory board of prominent philanthropists will then allocate another $1 million to the nominated charity of its choice.
Alongside organizations that have taken their campaigns online in a quest for votes, Friendship Circle’s humorous viral video has been making the rounds.
The Chabad-Lubavitch institution that provides support and advocacy to families of children with special needs is estimated at #35 in the contest.
“We are gratified by this generous charitable contest and opportunity,” says Rabbi Levi Shemtov, co-founder of the suburban-Detroit organization with branches around the world.
“We appreciate the involvement and the support that people have been offering. We hope to be able to use the funds to expand our efforts in helping children with special needs.”
His wife Bassie Shemtov added: “You may think this is simply a fun contest, but to our children with special needs, $25,000 will go a long way.”
The couple, who founded the Friendship Circle in 1994, recently travelled to Washington, D.C., as finalists in the Jewish Community Heroes contest.
Another organization competing is the Crown Heights-based Keren Simchas Chosson VeKallah – helping Lubavitch brides and grooms.
