Congregation Lubavitch, a Chabad synagogue that shares a building with Yeshivas Beis Dovid Shlomo on Norton Street in New Haven, Connecticut, is taking a stand to protect the health of its congregants.
The shul has been contacted by the New Haven Health Departement regarding the outbreak of the viral measles infection in New Haven County as well in New York.
“With cases now appearing in Crown Heights, exposure of Anash here is more likely to occur,” the shul’s president Moti Sandman wrote in a letter to local congregants this week.
Sandman said that “consultations with rabbinical and medical authorities have indicated to us that this measles outbreak constitutes a potentially serious health risk to those members of our community who have compromised immune systems.”
“Vaccinations are a vital way of stopping the spread of this disease,” he said and recommended that the New Haven Health Department Clinic offers Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine for anyone in the community.
“We therefore ask anyone who chooses not to vaccinate themselves or their children not to attend services or any community events until this health crisis has ended,” Sandman publicly asked.
On Friday, The Gedaliah Society, a network of Chabad medical professionals in Crown Heights, stated that it was “important for every child, man and woman in this community to make sure they have received two MMR vaccines.”
