A poem in Yiddish by Rabbi Zalman Baras obm was translated by his family this week.

Based on the Chassidic interpretation of the posuk “שש מאות אלף רגלי העם אשר אנכי בקרבו” quoted in the maamar “v’atah Te’tzaveh” – the maamar in which R’ Zalman had a special koch.

וואס פארלאנגט מען פון א איד
די קראנקייט ביי עם ווערט שטארקער געשווינד
דאס אטעמען קומט שוין אן גאר שווער
ווייסט ניט וואס צו טאן, ער קען שוין נישט מעהר
פון זיין טאט’ן אין הימל האט ער נאר איין באגער
[די צוקומט קען ער דאך נישט זעהן] די הארץ עס קלאפט עם אן אויפהער
פון די אויגן גיסן טרערן – א שטארקן געוויין
ח”ו ווייב און קינדער איבערלאזן אליין
קינדער דארפ’ן דאך די עלטערן – יעדער ווייסט
ערציען צו לעבן ווי דער אויבערשטער הייסט
ליב האבן א אידן און דער הייליגער תורה

“טראכט גוט וועט זיין גוט” דערהערט מען געוויס
דער רבי אונזער קאפ – מיר זיינען די פיס

Simcha and Bitachon

What is demanded of a Yid?

His decline grows more and more rapid

Each breath – a fight, no end in sight

Confounding thoughts, can’t take it anymore

Of his Father in Heaven he has but one request –

The future lies hidden, heart pounding in his breast –

Bitter cries, tears streaming from his eyes:

Oh, not to leave his wife and children bereft!

Children need their parents – an obvious fact

To show them how Hashem wants them to live and act

To love every Jew, and the holy Torah, too

And to fear no one besides Him.

Our children must always behold us

Studying and following the ways of Chassidus

For hiskashrus to the Rebbe we strive

That it always permeate our entire life

The Rebbe says we must have Bitachon

If we don’t feel encouraged, we must ask ourselves “Hayitochen?!”

Delve into the sichos and maamarim – absorb each word

It will elevate our every aspect – of this we are assured.

“Think good, and it will be good” – mind and heart meet

The Rebbe – our head, we are his feet*

And the more we learn about Geulah and Moshiach

The sooner he’ll arrive – as the Rebbe guaranteed!
