In honor of Chanukah, sponsored by the Premier of Tasmania, the Hon. Will Hodgman and hosted and attended by the speaker, Sue Hickey MP, joined 60 member of the Jewish community of Tasmania, (from the North West to Hobart) to kindle the candles in honor of the 3rd night of Chanukah.
The event, organized by Shluchim Yochanan and Rochel Gordon, was joined by members of the state parliament, and lay leaders of the Tasmanian Jewish community. A cocktail lunch was served after the Menorah was kindled.
Rebecca White, opposition leader, inspired the crowd with the idea of using ones light and ability to help others.
Health Minister, Michael Ferguson, pointed out that the message of Chanukah is one that continues throughout history, as he quoted, “Light drives away the shadows”, we as a human race need to tap into our inner light, and spread it to other, and continue fighting for the religious freedom that every person deserves.
The community was also privileged to hear a statement sent from the Prime Minister and opposition leader which was read by Speaker Sue Hickey.
