Members of the Orthodox Jewish community who have not been vaccinated are being barred from local yeshivas amid a measles outbreak.
There have already been 39 confirmed cases of measles in Borough Park and Williamsburg.
Starting Friday, the Health Department is ordering children in kindergarten through 12th grade to stay home unless they’ve received the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
It’s believed the outbreak started after unvaccinated children traveled to Israel and contracted the disease. The mandatory exclusion is a way to prevent the spread of measles in schools.
Common measles symptoms include rash and fever. It can be transmitted through airborne particles and droplets.
The Health Department typically allows an exception to the rules for religious reasons. However, since this is an outbreak with at least 39 cases, the department can make a change.
In a statement, the CEO of Boro Park Jewish Community Council said, “Many of our schools have already implemented such measures, before the DOH announced the new regulations. We expect 100 percent compliance from all of our schools and look forward to stopping this dread disease in its tracks.”
Council Member David Greenfield says there are ads in some Jewish publications promising a “fake cure” for measles, but he advises the best method is getting vaccinated.

I’m not prepared to tell anyone whether they should vaccinate or not, you are ALL adults. But I am prepared to tell you do your research , be strong in your decision because you will be responsible for the outcome of that desicion, no one else.
No, shame on you 37! The World Health Organization, a respected organization upon whom I think it is wise to rely (unless you are a conspiracy theorist), has repeatedly said that vaccines are generally safe and the risk in taking one far outweigh the risk of not taking it. The cases cited could have any number of variables associated with them (improper administering of the vaccine, unsafe or unhygienic surroundings…) they are in no way proof that vaccination generally is dangerous and should be avoided. You are spreading fear based on little evidence. These are the ignoramuses that must be… Read more »
I had my kids vaccinated. My mother had rubella ( German measels) when she was pregnant with my brother. My brother is deaf and retarded because of it.
Somehow the anti vaxxers make a lot more sense. They are also calmer, generally more knowledgeable people.
Pro vaxxers sound very gullible, and clearly don’t use logic to spit back what the popular sayings going around.
Actually, would be nice to have a school for the non vaxxers. Everyone can run miles away when they see us. We can even have a sign on our car that we don’t believe in the safety of vaccines.
Run away, we’re coming!
The issue of vaccines has unfortunately been allowed to be dictated by ignoramuses so that may be why we hear more about vaccine related deaths but that does not mean they are very common. And it certainly does not mean that everyone should stop taking them. Babies and children Chas VS passing away from vaccines which the risk for this is right on the insert because there is no way of knowing how the recipient will react until they are actually injected should not be classified as stories from the “ignoramus” A percentage of these families were awarded compensation from… Read more »
Have all these vaccine deaths been substantiated? I do know that the link between vaccines and autisms has been completely discredited and any “proof” suggesting there is a link has been shown to be total garbage. (seems like #33 is making some faulty connections.) And, even if they have been, there is always a risk of something happening. If someone, ch’v’sh, dies during heart surgery, we don’t say we should stop conducting heart surgeries. We all recognize that the procedure’s benefits outweigh the risks but there are risks all the same. The issue of vaccines has unfortunately been allowed to… Read more »
There are many families that are and do speak out in the public areas painfully telling their child’s vaccine injury via social media billboards e.g. Nick Catone online newsletters vaxxed tv on YouTube etc. . In the frum velt parents are more guarded to share their stories . There is such tremendous vaccine injury in our velt that it is getting harder to sweep under the rug and try to pass it off as unrelated to the vaccines. Thankfully more are coming forward .
18, I never used the words “selfish and dumb,” read the comment I made.
Is that how well you read information in front of your eyes? The same kind of research some families do before getting (or not) vaccines?
Here in our small lubavitch community someone became autistic from the mmr vaccine. Unfortunately, a frum girl from Columbus Ohio passed away from a vaccine. Both cases were healthy kids who immediately got sick after vaccine. In both cases the medical experts admitted that it was vaccine damage. Unfortunately, there are more cases of vaccine damage but it is kept quiet. Parents of vaccine injured kids are are having a hard time sharing their story because people get angry at them instead of validating them and showing compassion. So its all kept under the rug. News sites refuse to publish… Read more »
Everyone without an actual medical exemption by an actual doctor should have been required to get their shots a long time ago.
I mean if someone got it today , he needs to wait 14-21 days for the body to produce the antibodies to the measles and be effective… and it’s few doses of mmr shots …
someone who got sick with measles can get a shot too to heal the body …..
I don’t know , but we all must be checked for antibodies for measles /other and keep others on carantin till their shot be effective
Read again its not 20 out of 100k it’s point 20… And that’s.02
Your so-called “facts” are lies. The death rate from measles was never 0.2 in 100,000; that number is not from American Journal of epidemiology, it’s from your own imagination.
Recently vaccinated people are perfectly safe. This whole “virus shedding” thing has no basis in fact.
She has an open account that anyone can view. It’s extremely informative and you owe it to yourself as parent of a minor to give it a lookover.
If parents are too ignorant/lazy to protect their own kids, the city should do it.
@7
You cannot catch the illness from a vaccine. They stopped using live vaccines many decades ago.
I had a similar experience back in 2010 when my vaccinated teenagers got the mumps. The dept of health called me and it was like a Gestapo interrogation but where could they find fault given they had the mmr. They quietly told me it was another strain.
Hundreds of these stories have been reported – thank you. And the thousands who have “minor” ailments (autoimmune diseases, autism, learning challenges, chemical sensitivities, allergies) caused by the toxic adjuvants in vaccines? My favorite is the “LA Morah” #1. This might be the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever seen on collive and I feel sorry for students in LA who are dealing with this morah-yentah who resembles more of a National Enquirer than a stable mentor. Perhaps she should focus on her teaching and keep her nose out from where it doesn’t belong. Who exactly is the “doctor” providing false… Read more »
My kids were all vaccinated against measles and ended up getting it NONETHELESS!!
Wyett Harnden passed away suddenly on December 7th, 2018. 3 days prior he revived the rotavirus vaccine and 2 doses of the PCV vaccine. At his appt he was very healthy happy little boy. Following vaccines he wasn’t eating, very lethargic, very colicky. Mom (Ariel) called the doctor a few times and the doctor and nurses just kept saying it was normal. On Friday the 7th baby had passed away. No mother should have to go through this. This baby deserves justice and the truth deserves to be out there.
If it’s so contagious then every single school on these area codes should have the same requirement. Also these kids are playing together on shabbosim etc and that can’t be stopped. This seems to be just a tactic to push anti vax parents against the wall and have them cave in. As for children with autoimmune conditions who can’t get the vaccine: A) a healthy unvaxxed kid is not putting them at risk and B) a healthy child doesn’t need to also get autoimmune deseases as a RESULT of vaccines, in order to “protect” another kid. It’s a complicated sugya.… Read more »
Looks like some people are waiting for a tragedy r”l. “It’s not so many kids yet”, “no one does in America yet”
Non-vaxers, it’s fine. Just keep your kids home or make some commune-type school for your kids.
They don’t belong with normal kids anyway. Yet.
Dr. verification is Not acceptable under this ban. It’s either a vaccine or blood test to prove that you are immune.
It’s not fair to characterize people who question vaccines as “selfish or dumb”
These are well informed people that want to do what’s best for their families, with questions and concerns that have not been resolved!
To #2 what does ‘your experience mean? With all due respect, those who have done research do not see it this way – from experts.
To #4: Testing for antibodies titers don’t tell the whole story. There have been poeple who tested positive for antibodies for certain viruses, and yet got a strong case. On the other hand, people who had no anti-bodies, and were able to overcome virus naturally.
to #6: Each innovation has to be checked out for it’s merits.
to #7 Thank you!
TY to #9 and 10
what if i had gotten the measels as a kid?
i would not have to worry about my nursing baby, i would have given him immunity.
but im vaccinated,
not immune though
how silly
In societies tha are not malnourished, there is virtual;y no risk of damage or worse. There IS a munltitrillion medicoal industry. They must be given credit for the good tha they do, but there is also much lack of impartiality.
(They are also IMMUNE! to lawsuits, as the government made that the uninjured shoudl sue in vaccine court, and doctors and vaccine manufacturers cannot be sued.)
20 out of 100,000 (or 1 out of 5,000) is an unacceptable number by any measure! How many kids are in our Mosdos? Would you be able to sleep at night id=f something CH”V happened to even one of them?
How many deaths per 100,000 has the measles vaccine caused? Not a one! If you could save 1 in 5,000 children from death (and more from life-altering complications) why wouldn’t you?
Between Israel, America and any other first world country, do we have an exact number yet as to how many children have gotten measles? Is there at least an estimate?
What does that mean? That you know families who paid a doctor to say or document that they got the vaccine when indeed, they did not? (And where are you? In LA?)
It hasn’t affected crown Heights YET it’s just a matter of time
Just to get he record straight , as far as I understand the baby who died of measles in Israel was in fact not seen by a dr in it’s entire life
Parents didn’t believe in doctors for whatever reason. They brought him to the hospital when it was way too late
Very sad
Stop the hysteria and stop the fear-mongering. Pre vaccine era which is 1963 the death rate was .20 per hundred thousand this number is from American Journal of epidemiology of John Hopkins. The media which is funded by the pharmaceutical companies are creating a panic they’re doing the exact same things for Chickenpox. Our children and grandchildren will fear chicken pox like we fear measles guys wake up… FYI the most recent and final 2011 IOM report themselves confirm they cannot rule out encephalopathy, meningitis, seizures, ADEM (which is brain damage) from the MMR shot. If you read through that… Read more »
This doesn’t apply to crown heights yet. There are certain area codes that it includes such as for Boro Park and Williamsburg
If you had measles, you are indeed immune.
But if you are vaccinated, you might be immune.
Actually you might catch and spread the measles from the vaccine! Read the vaccine insert, it sais it in there!
In addition, your vaccinated immunity wears off…..
Wake up people. Selectively ignoring innovations of the goyish world does not make you holy.
Ahavas Yisroel = protecting your children and everyone else in your community.
FINALLY!
There is a blood test to test for immunity. I was pretty sure i had measles as a child and the blood test titre confirmed it so i avoided having to take the vaccine
Stay away from the public as chances that you will spread the measles are higher for the following 21 days then an unvaccinated person can spread it.
Unvaxed children put babies, those with autoimmune diseases, cancer, or other medical conditions that prevent them from being vaxed in great danger. MEASLES KILLS! It is not a harmless disease that you get over, like a toothache! I’ve seen first hand what measles does to people.
If you had measles as a child you are immune. If you are vaxed, you are immune. If you refuse, it could be YOUR child killing someone else’s, or your child dying like in Israel in recent weeks.
Overdramatic? Not from my own experience.
I know people who were able to pay for Dr. verification without actually getting vaccinations.
