U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke was in Crown Heights this week, meeting with Devorah Halberstam, community activist and co-founder for the Jewish Children’s Museum.
Also in attendance at the meeting were Mica Soffer, Publisher of COLlive.com, and Eli Slavin, Ms. Clarke’s liaison to the Jewish community.
Over dinner at Basil, Halberstam congratulated Ms. Clarke on her recent reelection, and the group discussed the committees which Ms. Clarke will sit on in the next term, and how she can assist the Jewish community of Crown Heights in that capacity.
Also discussed were the relationships Ms. Clarke maintains with her large and varied constituency in the areas of Brooklyn’s Ninth District, which covers Park Slope, Brownsville, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Midwood, Prospect Heights, Sheepshead Bay and Windsor Terrace, as well as the Crown Heights community’s endorsement and efforts to get out the vote for Ms. Clarke during the recent primary election.
Halberstam also voiced concerns regarding security in the Crown Heights neighborhood, especially in light of the recent shooting in a Pittsburgh Synagogue, and the rise in violent crime and anti-Semitic incidents around the United States and in Crown Heights.
Ms. Clarke was concerned to hear about the worries of neighborhood residents, and said she would be reaching out to the NYPD and law enforcement to investigate possible additional security and how to address this issue moving forward.
“We agreed to continue the conversation in the coming months, and to work on initiatives for the benefit of the community in the future,” Halberstam said.
One solution. Change New York.
We are lucky to have such dedicated people in our schuchna fulfilling pure lesheym shomayim work on behalf of the klal, we all owe therm hakaros hatov.
Pictures are good, but we need action for the sake of our Jewish community
haha every one is with smiles and political procedures. looks all fine n dandy but, hopefully just hopefully someone can really take care of the extreme upscale of violence in the hood
good shabbos
BS”D I hope she reigns in her friend the AG from going after Trump
She’s going to reach out to the NYPD? Really?
What we really, really need Clark to do, is reach out to the punks, to the public schools, to the churches, and tell her constituents that civilized people don’t act like thugs!
That’s what she needs to do.
I would ask Yvette to push for three things to make our community safer. 1. Evening and night car patrols. 2. Have the nypd officers, sergeants and lieutenants meet with the Jewish community twice a yr in a town hall meeting, let them really understand our concerns and customs in our lives. 3. Arrange for a class at a public school to meet with a class at a yeshiva, let the students learn about each other, and continue to bring one class at a time to meet with their Jewish counterparts.
