Truth about the beard
October 19, 2018 2:29 pm

In reality, the beard is a very holy thing. But there is a difference between what we perceive to be the image and spirituality of a beard and the actual kedusha of the beard. What I mean is that often we attach a certain “greatness” to keeping a beard. Ie. only great tzaddikim keep full beard, but normal people don’t. The idea of a psak halacha though is that it is applies universally (without an explicit heter). Meaning that the whole Idea of the psak of the TT requires us to adjust our attitude towards a beard and see it… Read more »

My father related to me that his father was a Talmud if the old satmar rebbe back in Europe before World War Two. When he met his future wife, she insisted he shave his beard if he wants to marry her. He did not know what to do so he asked his Rebbe the satmar Rav what to do. The Rebbe told him to shave it and grow it back after marriage. Which he did.

Every mitzvah is precious and we can’t know how it tips the scale in shamayim and ultimately bring Moshiach! With that in mind I wouldn’t be judging anyone for trimming their beard. Everyone is on their own level and has their own strengths and weaknesses.

I appreciate your comments. There is however a major problem with citing halachic authorities that forbid, to the exclusion of many others who permit. This is my problem with the Sefer”Hadras Ponim Zoken” which seems to suggest that all who trim there beards are sinners and violators of Halacha. Basically its saying that half of kellal yisrael are avaryonim ??!!!

Having a beard is a mitzvah. One cannot take one mitzva and say this reflects everything about the person.
Everybody is on their level and on their journey.

According to the Tzemach Tzedek — the third Lubavitcher Rebbe and a globally-recognized Halachic authority — it is a biblical prohibition for a man to cut his beard. Thus, though your challenge that a person’s inside should match his outside (perhaps), if it’s an Avera to cut one’s beard, he shouldn’t do so. That’s what the Rebbe seems to be encouraging this young man, who was clearly up for the challenge, to strive for,

I know how serious Chabad is on trimming a beard. But should not this reflect the inner dimension of a person?
Can a long beard and chassidic garb cover up all else which needs “Tikun”? I personally find it hard to understand the extremity of this matter of not trimming a beard. Don’t so many frum Jews do so????

thanks
