Holding the chicken
September 17, 2018 1:46 pm

Growing up I learned to hold the chicken with two hands, one on its wings and one on its feet, this way you’re supporting the chicken from the bottom and not pulling on its wings (just holding them to prevent it from flapping away)

If you’re doing kaporos yourself and holding the siddur with one hand, or holding multiple chickens, I understand only having one hand free per chicken – but in all other cases, it’s a simple and easy way to take a little more care of the animal (at no extra charge :))

It is great to see that there is no tzar ba’ley chayim. The chickens were receiving water and even being fed.
That’s the way it should be.
And I hope they end up in someones oven and not in the garbage.

Interesting

Looks like everyone is having a good time. That’s fine but then what’s the point of this minhag? And why does everyone hold the chicken by its wings?

In is written in halacha:

וּבוֹחֲרִים בִּלְבָנִים, עַל שֵׁם שֶׁנֶּאֶמַר, אִם יִהְיוּ חֲטָאֵיכֶם כַּשָּׁנִים כַּשֶּׁלֶג יַלְבִּינוּ.

You should select white chickens, for it is said, “Though your sins will be like scarlet they will become white as snow.” (Isaiah 1:18).

(קצשו”ע פרק קלא סעיף א)

The Story Behind the Story

While some are upset about whether Kaparos treats the chickens humanely, I am more concerned about the lack of inclusion and diversity in the photos.
I could not help but notice that all of the chickens were white.
There are plenty of non-white chickens that could have been brought to CH and been given the chance to be part of the community for however brief a period of time.

Diversity and Inclusion Matters.

Minhag Chabad is also
1) to accept all with love and kindness
2) to do kapores on erev Yom Kippur.
Maybe the fathers took their children today and he will be doing it erev Yom Kippur in their hat, jacket and gartel

Great Kapporas shots!

Reminder: Minhag Chabad is to don a hat, jacket, and (if married) a gartel, when reciting kaporos.
