A Brooklyn man is under arrest after a hit and run yesterday in the heart of Borough Park that sent three Orthodox Jewish individuals to the hospital.
Police said that the incident took place at the intersection of 11th Avenue and 56th Street at 6:20 PM. A 64 year old man, a 55 year old man and a six year old boy were crossing at the intersection when a 2007 Honda Odyssey reversed direction, striking all three before leaving the scene.
After being contacted by victims’ relatives just before 11 PM, Shmira responded to the accident scene and began reviewing security cameras from nearby homes, which appeared to show that the driver of the van deliberately targeted his victims.
The footage shows the minivan backing up on 56th Street past a parked school bus and towards the 11th Avenue intersection, waiting for a car to pass before continuing in reverse and heading straight for the three victims who were standing near the sidewalk in front of a parked car.

Reviewing additional surveillance footage, Shmira members were able to follow the van’s progress locating the vehicle at approximately 2 AM parked in front of 1027 58th Street.
“We confirmed that we had identified the correct vehicle and then brought 12 of our own cars onto the block and waited for the driver to show up,” Levi Leifer, director of Shmira, told VIN News. “He came outside at 8:24 in the morning and we called police who came quickly and apprehended him.”
The driver, 27 year old Juan Paulino of Sunset Park, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force reviewed the incident and determined that it was not bias related.
Paulino was previously arrested on at least one other occasion, and was charged with assault in 2007 for assault after throwing a glass bottle that struck another individual.
To me it looked like he deliberately turned the rear of car in the direction of the pedestrians he rammed in to. Take a closer look at the video; you’ll realize that he had to have deliberately turned the steering wheel if he was to hit the victims as he did. Had he not turned the steering wheel he’d have driven a straighter line right past them. It’s hard to prove bias in this case. It’s definitely deliberate though and he should be charged for manslaughter.

That was attempted murder. No one will go after him and he’ll get off scot free- a living example for other animals like him-unless a HUGE action is taken to protest this and a community effort made to seek and capture and bring him to a fair, uncompromising trial.

A hate crime makes the punishment much more severe, but can only be used if there is proof the crime was committed because of a bias towards the victims race, religion etc

Somebody please explain what happens when a crime is classified as a hate crime? What does it change? Someone commited a crime, someone got hurt and you’re upset that it’s not given a certain classification. It seems to me people get some sort of “satisfaction”, for lack of a better word, when people hating yidden is given official recognition. Sure people hate us and try to kill us, look at history. I couldn’t tell if there was anyone else in the hit & run vehicle but the driver. And I also don’t understand why he backed up so very fast across a not so quiet intersection if his purpose wasn’t to make a turn. He appeared to go quite fast at an angle in the victim’s direction though. It doesn’t look innocent at all to me. Sorry.
We simply do not know the whole story. I am sure cops questioned him and he gave no implication that he was targeting anyone. SO, then please provide the explanation for this highly bizarre set of actions by the driver, that (as another person posted above) could have resulted in the driver being t-boned by cross traffic — a danger even for the driver!
What: Did the driver think he saw something valuable in the street and wanted to go back and take another look? Was the driver wanting to get a second look at a pretty girl walking on the sidewalks of the cross street?

Also he got home quite safely without any further collisions and no signs of distraction, confusion or intoxicated driving.
He was not distracted enough to stop and avoid being hit by another car while backing up and if he was drunk they would have been able to detect that also. Then after he hit them he was not distracted, confused or drunk enough to prevent himself from racing away from the scene of the crime asap! Can only be calculatingly deliberate! The problem is you can’t prove it was a hate crime without 1) proving it was intentional 2) proving he was targeting Jews. You can’t simply say look at the video it was for sure xyz, because the video only shows his actions, not what was going in his heart and mind.
