On Wednesday, the 28th Tammuz 5778, London’s senior Shliach Rabbi Shmuel Lew received a notification on his phone. It notified him that there is a person who wishes to put on Tefillin.
The requester was Phillip Hollander. He had been to Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, a popular site for public speeches and debates, and heard about a mobile app named “Wrapp,” that pairs men wishing to put on Tefillin with others willing to assist.
Due to work commitments, Rabbi Lew wasn’t able to immediately make the trip, but was passionate enough about Mivtzoim to not let the opportunity pass. He contacted Rabbi Mendel Raskin who agreed to drive over.
It turns out, this was Hollander’s very first time putting on Tefillin in his life. Hollander said he has been going to a shul on Shabbos and meets there Rabbi Zalman Brackman of the Lubavitch Kollel in London.
The connection began this past Shavuos when the shul was short of a Minyan. One of the regulars who knew that Hollander is Jewish and lives nearby walked over and asked him to join. Since then, Hollander hasn’t missed a week.
Hollander was grateful to Rabbi Raskin for making the trip, and said that inspired by this Mitzva and after putting on Tefillin for the first time in his life, he would like to purchase a pair of Tefillin and to lay Tefillin regularly.
Welcome to the Tefilin club, brother!
is the app already available outside the us?
