‘6 Year Prison Sentence for a Bris’

Elected officials in Denmark will be discussing a proposal to ban the age-old Jewish tradition of Bris Milah for children, JNS reported.

The move follows a petition that attracted more than 50,000 signatures and calls for a six-year prison sentence for those carrying out a circumcision on boys under the age of 18.

Earlier this year, the fellow Scandinavian country Iceland considered a ban on Bris Milah. However, that bill stalled amid opposition from lawmakers and international outcry.

Rabbi Yitzchok Loewenthal, Director of Chabad of Denmark in Copenhagen, said: “We see this in a serious and serious light, and we are working in full coordination with the Jewish community in the country to stop this legislation.”

The Jewish community in Denmark has objected to the petition, saying that it has practiced Bris Milah without issues in the country for more than 400 years, JNS said.

Loewenthal noted that at this point, the measure is not expected to pass in the Danish parliament as the 3 largest parties announced that they oppose the idea.

“This isn’t a simple battle,” he said. “They are going after any religious concept that is difficult for them to understand. We hope for the good and plan on continuing to work and spread holiness and teaching Judaism.”
