Beginning in 5732 (1972), the Rebbe would hold an annual Erev Shavuos farbrengen.
During the Farbrengen, the Rebbe would often mark the completion of Mesichta Sota, which Chassidim customarily study during the days of Sefiras Ha’Omer. He would likewise derive lessons from and about Shavuos, applicable to one’s day-to-day avodah.
That of 5742 (1982), was particularly memorable. The Rebbe began with a fascinating siyum on Mesichta Sota, analyzing the various levels of humility mentioned at the Mesichta’s conclusion in both Talmud Bavli and Yerushalmi.
After reciting a Maamar on a posuk that discusses Dovid Hamelech (whose yahrtzeit is on Shavuos), the Rebbe proceeded to address the crowd with three sichos, each of which were urgent calls to action toward the various mivtzoim, especially Shavuos related.
At the Farbrengen’s end, the Rebbe instructed that an emergency meeting take place in order to properly facilitate the above mivtzoim. After adding that it should begin with words of Torah from each of the Rebbeim, the Rebbe enumerated each of them by name, and concluded that the gathering would be a continuation of the farbrengen.
