Rabbi Tzvi Greenwald, a veteran educator and prominent member of the Kfar Chabad, Israel, community, passed away on Wednesday, 3 Iyar, 5778.
He was 85 and had been battling a terrible illness in recent months.
Rabbi Mordechai Tzvi Greenwald was a beloved veteran Chabad educator for more than fifty years. He was one of the chief educators of the vocational school in Kfar Chabad for many years, and in the latter part of his life he devoted himself to giving lessons in the framework of the Tiferet Zekeinim in the Beit Menachem synagogue in Kfar Chabad.
One of the early founders of Tzach in Israel, he was a lecturer at conferences organized by them, both at the central meetings and other Chabad events in the kibbutzim.
He was known for the memorable and inspiring lectures he gave at many Chabad events, including the Bar Mitzvah of the Heroes’ children.
Rabbi Greenwald was born in Jerusalem to his parents Chaim Yosef Shlomo and Chaya Perka Greenwald. In his youth, he studied at Torat Emet Yeshiva in Jerusalem.
During the British Mandate, he joined the ranks and fought alongside them for the liberation of the Land of Israel from British rule.
After his marriage to his wife, Rivka Miriam, and with the establishment of the vocational school in Kfar Chabad, he joined the educational staff in the year 5706 and set up his residence in Kfar Chabad, teaching at the school throughout their years of operation until 1996.
Thanks to his powerful speaking abilities, he was asked to join the various activities organized by Tzach in Israel, and he participated as a speaker in many Chabad-Lubavitch kibbuzim, at major events that took place over the years at Beit Menachem in Kfar Chabad and other major events.
He was also the regular presenter of the Bar Mitzvah celebration for the children of the heroes, and for years he led the official Central Farbrengen in honor of the 19th of Kislev in Kfar Chabad, attended by many dignitaries.
In 1982 he began to give a regular shiur in a synagogue in Holon, and gathered around him a group of people who began to participate regularly in classes.
After the closure of the vocational school and his retirement from daily activities in the field of education, he began to give Shiurim in the Tiferet Zekeinim Kollel in the Beit Menachem synagogue.
He is survived by his wife and children: Rabbi Menachem Mendel Greenwald – Rehovot, Rabbi Naftali Greenwald – Crown Heights, Rabbi Peretz Tuvia Greenwald – Long Beach, California, Rabbi Israel Greenwald – Kfar Chabad, Rabbi Yitzchak Greenwald – Kfar Chabad, Rabbi Shalom Greenwald – Kfar Chabad, Rabbi Shmuel Greenwald -Flatbush, NY, Mrs. Malka Gerlitzky – Crown Heights, Mrs. Chana Heber – Crown Heights and Mrs. Ita Ruth Ceitlin – Tzfas.
He was predeceased by his daughter Leah Schtroks OBM.
The levaya took place today in Israel.

We want to extend our heartfelt condolences to Rabbi Peretz and Rishi Greenwald and all the Greenwald families on the passing of their beloved father. We recall how warmly and graciously he and his wife (may she live and be well) welcomed us to their home in Kfar Chabad in 1993 and generously gifted us with several etrogim from his own tree to take back to Long Beach CA for Succos. May his memory continue to inspire all of us to deeds of kindness accomplished with genuine love for all Yidden. May Hashem comfort you and all the mourners of… Read more »
Is Rabbi Greenwald related to the famous Chust Pupa Chassidic Dynasty whose name is Greenwald I always wanted to know, if yes how are they related to the Pupa Rebbe in Bklyn ?
Zaida Greenwald, Morah Tzvi, Rabbi Greenwald, Maspia. He had many different names. He exemplified and personified true אהבת ישראל. As a father and Zaida, he made great effort to make it to every Simcha. As a Rabbi and Maggid Shiur, anyone who knew him enjoyed his classes. He just had a clear way to explain even a difficult concepts and brought it down in simple words. Many knew him as someone who you can confide in. He did a lot of kindness behind closed doors that he never spoke about. To say the least- He was a Legend! May the… Read more »
I would daven in Beit Menachem.while he was leading the seniors’ Shiur. I loved the depth of knowledge and rich authoritative voice as he read and taught.
I loved it when during a Lag Ba’Omer video when he was shown as an “actor” all the viewers in Kfar Chabad let out an enormous loud cheer of pride for our champion of Torah.

Very fond memories of Rabbi Greenwald leading a geshmake Farbrengen for us Bochurim in Morristown in 5757-58, during one of his visits to his daughter and son-in-law ז”ל, and יבלח”ט their children. In the early hours of the morning, in the middle of the Farbrengen, the fire alarm went off. When the fire alarm went off in the Yeshiva, which seemed like a regular occurrence to the chagrin and anger of the local fire dept and its volunteers, we’d all pile out as required, and wait patiently for the all clear. I was deeply inspired to see this דערהויבענע איד,… Read more »
Wednesday 3rd of Iyar 5778- April 18 2018. Today the world lost a really special person. My grandfather Reb Mordechai Tzvi Greenwald from Kfar Chabad in Israel, returned his soul to Hashem. He was a giant of a man. Physically and spiritually. Someone who lived and breathed Torah and Mitzvos. Someone who with my grandmother may she live and be well, raised a beautiful family. For over 50 years his life was education. From the very young to the elderly, he knew how to communicate with everyone. He taught with love. He taught by example. O what an example he… Read more »
Our Zeideh kah has hundreds of descendants and each one was treated and loved as if they were the only one.
He always had a good lesson to teach, a kind word to say, and a caring heart to count on.
He was a role model of a real chossid, a powerful educator, a most respected father and grandfather, and a truly humble person. We will continue to follow in his ways and make him proud!
