Shua Polonsky, 31, OBM

Shua Polonsky, a young husband and father from Crown Heights who suddenly fell ill and united the world in prayer, passed away. Update: Levaya today (Friday) at 9:45 AM.

By COLlive reporter

Yehoshua Rafael HaLevi Polonsky, a young resident of Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood who united the world in prayer for his recovery, passed away on Thursday, 20 Cheshvan 5778.

He was 31.

The Cleveland-born Shua suddenly fell ill two weeks ago with acute heart failure. He has since undergone 3 open-heart surgeries.

Family, friends and fellow Jews from around the world soon joined in prayer. A social media hashtag #ShuaStrong encouraged people to do Mitzvos and share a Chassidic saying in his honor.

Women attending the Great Big Challah Bake at Chabad of West Boca Raton in Florida and in Northwest Ohio had him in mind, while Lubavitch men in Cleveland joined for a Chassidic farbrengen in his merit.

Many in Crown Heights and Australia joined Tehillim groups and students of Reed College in Portland, Oregon joined a Loaves of Love program at the Chabad House and baked challah to be distributed to fellow students in honor of a recovery.

"I, together with my family are utterly humbled, overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of love, compassion, generosity, and commitment to action that has been flooding in," his wife Simi Polonsky wrote on October 26.

"The worldwide generosity of your hearts and your hands helps us rise above the fear and terror that creeps into the innermost depths of our raw hearts," added Polonsky, who founded the tznius women's fashion label Frock Swap.

Erin Stiebel, an educator at Partners Detroit Young Jewish Professionals, wrote: "I have known Shua since high school and have always been in awe of his love for life, his genuine kindness and his ability to light up a room whenever he walks in."

Friends reported this week that doctors reviewed Polansky's condition and said, "it was worse than they hoped and that his GI Tract looks to have gone undergone serious damage. Irreparable damage."

"I'm in shock to hear about his loss," Rabbi Daniel Schonbuch, a licensed marriage and family therapist, told "Our community has lost a great individual, father and husband. May his name be a blessing for all of us."

Schonbuch said "Yehoshua was a fantastic and aspiring psychologist. We had wonderful conversations about his training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and his work helping other people."

He is survived by his wife, Simi (nee Gestetner) and children Emanuella and Sophia.

He is also survived by his parents, Leonardo and Yocheved Polonsky of Cleveland, Ohio, grandparents Mel and Marcia Waxman and siblings: Rachel Polonsky, Elisheva (Polonsky) Bialo, Menachem Polonsky, Gabi Polonsky, Natalie Polonsky and Chaya Polonsky.

The Levaya will take place today, Friday, leaving Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park at 9:45 AM and passing by 770 Eastern Parkway at 10:45 AM, to burial in Old Montefiore Cemetery.

He brought the world together. This is the start of something beautiful and earth shattering. Much love to his wonderful family.

Always smile, and love your fellow man.

May Hashem wipe away all tears with Moshiach now. Ad mosai!?

There are no words sufficient to describe such a tragedy. It is beyond comprehension. Ad Mosai?!? How much longer Hashem? To all those who davened and said Tehillim, thank you for your love and care. We have to keep on going even though the ways and reasons of the Almighty. Hold your loved ones close, cherish every second with them. Life is fragile and too short to focus on trivialities. Love yourself and others and do acts of kindness and support often and with a sense of urgency as the Rebbe z”tl said. Hugs and love from a fellow Jew.

Dear Family
As someone who experienced an out of nowhere tragedy, and as you may find with others who experienced a tragedy like yours, Hashem is charging you with a special lifelong mission to bring light to the world, in a way nobody else can, as a direct result of the specific tragedy you experienced and that the only reason that something like this could happen is for some unfathomable and unexplainable good to come from it as a result of everything you have experienced and that only you could handle. Now it is being revealed that you are a special soldier in the Rebbe's Army with a mission that nobody else has the strength or ability to complete...and I know you will make carry out the mission...Shua and everyone else are waiting!
(11/10/2017 3:18:12 AM)
You've shown your true colors-- so strong beautiful and wise. Sharing Chassidic thoughts thay have literally changed me so much! Your steely faith and focus on the truth in hard times is astounding. Shua has already made this world a better place-- I have taken upon myself so many important changes just yesterday. Another stranger -- feeling close. May Hashem send comfort and strength for you and your girls

From Hensha
I am in shock like all the others. I knew Yocheved growing up in Cleveland. She was very close to my daughter. I spent many a Shabbos at the Waxman home and was close to the grandparents, Marcia and Mel. I vividly remember Leonardo spending much time in our home on President Street when he came to be with the Rebbe.
May Hashem comfort the entire very special family in their pain.
(11/10/2017 5:48:21 AM)
It is not fair! It is not fair these girls will have to say izkor at shul, it is not fair their father won’t be there to walk them to the chuppah, it is not fair that Tsophia probably won’t remember her dad, it is not fair Simi won’t share her entire life with the person she truly loved. I just cannot understand!
And let me tell you something, I don’t even know them, i don’t even live in America, but the impact they have both done in my life is unbelievable. I just hope Simi and her family the best, thank you for changing me
(11/10/2017 5:52:12 AM)
You are my hero and a true hero to a lot of ppl I know. You did not deserve this and g-d should bless you with the power and the strength to carry on and raise your children. You and shua have inspired so many ppl to do good and I myself have taken upon things and will try to keep them forever. I do not know you guys and neither do they people who I know, but we were all rooting for you and we still are! The amount of people you have touched for the good will surely have an effect on this entire community and world. We are all #shuastrong
(11/10/2017 5:57:07 AM)
My daughter, Essie, has been so very touched by Shua's goodness and is truly heart broken with the shock of his passing. I have been praying for his healing and now the Lord has done this in a way that leaves those who loved him in pain. I pray, now, for his precious family!
(11/10/2017 6:30:00 AM)
Shocking, just shocking, moshiach now!
(11/10/2017 7:24:45 AM)
Simi, words cannot describe the pain I'm feeling for you right now. Hashem should give you the strength to bring up your beautiful children and we ashould all see the coming of moshiach NOW and be reunited with your loving husband.
(11/10/2017 8:03:47 AM)
So sad and painful
(11/10/2017 8:23:50 AM)
Shua was very passionate about the impact of technology on relationships.
In his memory, can we be more careful? Leave phones aside when spending time with loved ones, be more present when talking with people, turn off phones at night.
It is heartbreaking that Shua can no longer be with us and his family as he always was, fully there, listening and helping, but let his life be a guide for us.
We don't know how long we have left, so let's treasure that time and make sure we spend it with our spouses and children, without artificial interruptions.

It was so hard to say those 3 words.
Simi, I follow you on Instagram, and you have the most beautiful smile and family. I'm shocked that this happened, and can not imagine what you are going through right now. It's so unreal, and it's so hard to accept. I don't know you, but I can feel your pain and loss. I'm crying with you.
The world went so dark yesterday, and the only way for it to go light again is with Moshiach.
May we merit to bring Moshiach now!

You're absolutely right. A great husband /spouse and Dad/parent comes from planing and effort. Let's put aside our phones and make time for our loved ones in his merit.

BDE - Hamocom yenachem ...
Me and my 10 year old son spoke to him a few days before he got sick regarding the Oholai Torah Crown heights basket ball league - which he voluntarily was arranging. He patiently took time to explain to answer my child's questions and explain the purpose was to encourage ahavas yisroel and achduse yisroel etc. A special person.

May the family be comforted by hashem amongst the morners of zion. Vkitsu vranennu shochnai ofor vehu broshom.
