A crane collapsed on the Tappan Zee Bridge Tuesday, causing officials to close the span to all traffic, officials said.
The New York Thruway Authority posted an alert to its website shortly after noon stating that the collapse blocked all lanes of I-87 between mileposts 13.1 and 16.2.
Chopper 4 over the scene shows the red splintered remains of the crane boom crashed atop two lanes of traffic on the bridge, with debris strewn all over the roadway. Part of the crane boom caved in an outer concrete barrier of the bridge. Footage from traffic cameras in the area show severe traffic buildup.
It’s not clear what caused the collapse. There wasn’t immediate information on injuries, but emergency crews appeared to be assisting people at the scene.
Messages were left with Gov. Cuomo’s office and Tappan Zee Bridge Constructors, LLC.
The Westchester County Executive’s office confirmed the collapse and said it was working with local police. Officials in Rockland County, on the other side of the span, are also responding.
