Soul II Soul Rocks Crown Heights

A sold out crowd gathered Sunday at the Brooklyn School of Music in Crown Heights for the Soul II Soul Concert.

The annual concert, directed by Shmuly and Tzirl Goldman, funds Chasdei Soul II Soul, which supports Jewish special education for Crown Heights children with special needs.

This year’s show had the unique twist of three generations of Jewish rock bands, each of whom brought an innovative new sound to Jewish music of their time. Audience members were dazzled by the slick hi-tech lighting and video effects by the D-Vision company.

Concert hosts Zalmy Shapiro, Chaim Goldman and Yehuda Reichman welcomed the crowd and introduced each act with great energy and excitement.

The Rogers Park band’s Yosef Peyson and Mordy Kurtz opened the show with a selection of Jewish folk hits from their recently debuted album.

They were followed by Diaspora Yeshiva Band’s Avrohom Roseblum, who performed his classic Jewish rock hits such as “Hu Yiftach Libeinu,” “malchuscha” and “ivdu es Hashem B’simcha” with the audience singing and clapping along.

The second half of the show featured the wildly popular 8th Day band’s Shmuel and Bentzi Marcus, who performed hit songs from their many albums to the delight of the audience, who couldn’t get enough of their popular favorites such as “Avraham,” “Bounce,” “Tracht gut vet zein gut” and of course, “Ya’alili.”

The show concluded with a spirited finale by all the performers, ending with the Soul to Soul theme song.
