President Barack Obama named Judge Sonia Sotomayor the new Supreme Court Justice. If confirmed by the senate, Sotomayor, 54, will succeed retiring Justice David Souter, becoming the first Hispanic ever appointed to the Supreme Court.
Obama introduced Sotomayor calling her an “an inspiring woman” who has the respect of her colleagues on the bench.
“My heart today is bursting with gratitude,” Sotomayor said after being introduced by Obama.
In a case concerning a public menorah display brought before her in 1993, Sotomayor then a district court judge, ruled in favor of allowing a Chabad menorah in a city park and struck down a city council resolution barring “fixed outdoor displays of religious or political symbols in parks.”
Regarding Abortion (and to respond to #1) The PRO-abortion-ists are not happy with Judge Sotomayor. Look ay her judgments regarding abortion: In 2002, she ruled against an abortion rights group that claimed the so-called “Mexico City Policy,” prohibiting U.S. funding for foreign groups performing or supporting abortion services, violated their First Amendment rights. She reasoned that the government is “free to favor the anti-abortion position over the pro-choice position.” In a 2004 case she ruled in favor of anti-abortion protesters who claimed a city had improperly trained police officers who allegedly used excessive force on them.
