Does “chai” mean “life” or “tea”?
Starbucks, the largest coffeehouse company in the world, will soon be brewing not far from Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway.
The chain known for its coffee, as well as its brand of Tazo teas, will be opening a new branch at the ground-floor space of the new apartment building in Crown Heights, DNAinfo.com reported.
“Starbucks is always looking for great locations to better meet the needs of our customers, and we are happy to confirm that will be opening a new location at 341 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn this fall,” a spokesperson told COLlive.
You will be able to order a line of caffeinated beverages and even a “Dirty Chai,” the name for the a Chai tea latte with an added espresso shot.
Asked about the possible availability of kosher food items in the new store, the spokesperson said: “At this time, that is all of the information that we are able to share.”
Coffee with cholov yisrael milk is available at Jewish-owned bakeries and stores in Crown Heights. The dairy milk offered at most Starbucks branches is cholov stam or Organic Vanilla Soy Milk.
Rabbis from various Kosher certification organizations have written extensively about the Kosher and non-kosher available products at the Starbucks chain.

I find it amusing that some of the very same people who complain about the cost of kosher meat, tuition, summer expenses, legitimate bombardments from tzedakah organizations etc. have no qualms about running for an obscenely expensive cup of Starbucks coffee. How much is a status symbol worth, and who really needs it anyway? P.S. I doubt that Starbucks was suddenly starstruck with our community; more likely they figured the Yuppies that are making their way into Bed- Stuy as well as those already residing in Park slope would be good fodder for this kind of inanity.
This is located in Crown Heights.
Some of these comments reek of paranoia.
Omg can everyone calm down?
What “pritzus”?
It’s a coffee shop. Not a club.
Honestly, you’re kidding yourselves if you think coffee will make “hanging out” more prevalent.
The people who would be hanging out are gonna hangout even without Starbucks…
I guess the only benefit will be that it’s a close location to go on mivtzoyim.
i think the real problem is now there is a bigger nisayon for kashrus. i don’t think hanging out with friends is really bad it could be used for the good or used for bad- but the biggest problem is this question about kashrus- why dont we have good coffee shops @ that side of ch? we could really all d it we will all strive to be the best we could be hatzlacha!
Starbucks uses the same hot dish washer to wash oven grills & grates which are dripping in bacon and cheese to wash all of the mixing utensils (at the same time) — major problem. besides black coffee be warned!!
it happened 2 me to. the soy milk was dairy.
it might not be real milk, but its still not allowed
EVERYONE under the age of 50 will be ‘hanging’ there…
re soy milk..the whole idea of soy is that it is NOT dairy..it it has an ouD it is because it’s made on milchig equpment…
that is a problem…but it’s not mamash milk…
i have checked
Looks like it is time to open a chabad house….
Curious to know what people think about this one: Lot 1: Presently, CH has a problem with crime and other activities, not in anyone’s best interest. But, for some reason, BH, there is virtually none or very miniscule assimilation (like, who would…?). Lot 2: WIth many more professionals(what do we call them -“happy yuppy yippies?”) flocking here, crime will go down, the area will get expensive, but will be glittering! There was a Yeshiva in a very warm, beachy part of the country, where some smart alecky bachurim could not resist saying,”Oh, the kippa, .. so sweet.” In Williamsburgh (now… Read more »
Kiss your teenagers goodbye.
Which is great. Doesn’t affect us much.
Another place of pritzus….
lol with some of these typical comments —– but seriously this is great news for CH and we can’t wait!
The genious idea is of COLlive to post this, generating tons of comments, and views expecting comments. This is pretty much as out of crown heights as the other ones are and doesn’t really have a bearing affect in our community.
Everyone relax.
on many fronts
Do we need another hangout? B”H it is not in the heart of crown heights but will still be a place of pritzus. Questionable kashrut etc. you vey. Would Williamsburg allow this? How far have we fallen that we are excited about this!
there goes the neighborhood. hi rents , bars, nightclubs next?
I used to drink coffee there with soy milk till some one told me that only drinks soy milk informed me that most soy mills are dairy. I didn’t believe him i started to ask to see the bottle everytime and found out that somtimes Starbucks don’t always use a pareve soy milk. so even if they have a seprate machine for soy latte the machine might still be dairy which most places don’t have .
cant wait
Appreciate the last few lines about reminders re kashrus
Genius idea, the place will be packed between dads getting their early morning coffee, Bais Rivka girls looking for a nice place to study (and get coffee!), and yuppies…And don’t forget those nine year olds looking for wifi…
Oy vey more פריצות?
Milk?
ANOTHER HANGOUT!!
Agree!! Yet still excited
Since when was Franklin and EP considered “jewish crown heights”?
