“Mofsim after mofsim,” was the way 25 year old Shmuli Tuvel of Crown Heights described the miraculous return of his kidnapped sister in law, six month old Esti, abducted yesterday morning by a former maid from the home of his parents Rabbi Yitzchak and Tamar Chayempour in Great Neck.
The Chayempours, who are shluchim in Great Neck and run a summer camp there, hired 53 year old Gloria Suarez for a temporary summer position. A native of Uruguay, Suarez’s duties included only cooking and cleaning, not babysitting, and the agency that made the placement had done background checks which showed no problems of any sort.
Suarez’s employment ended with the Chayempours this past Friday, but she repeatedly asked her former employers to let her stay on for just one more day, while she waited for her new apartment to be ready.
In retrospect, there were numerous signs that something was amiss, according to Tuvel. Suarez spoke frequently about how she had always wanted to have children of her own. She frequently offered to take the infant for a walk although babysitting was never part of her job and offered to buy formula for baby Esti after her termination last Friday. Suarez, who was planning to return to Uruguay in two weeks, had moved her belongings out of the Chayempour’s Great Neck home, but claimed she needed to stay with them because she didn’t have the key to her new apartment.
“She had lived in the same apartment for the past eight years,” said Tuvel in an exclusive interview with VIN News. “Why would she suddenly take a new apartment just days before she was due to leave the country?”
The drama began yesterday morning at approximately 9:30 AM, when after spending a sleepless night with the infant, Mrs. Chayempour went to take a nap. Seizing the opportunity, Suarez took the baby, a bottle of Cholov Yisroel baby formula, two bottles and left the house carrying the baby in her arms.
Twenty minutes later the miracles began to unfold.
While normally Rabbi Chayempour would not have been in Great Neck that time of day, he was returning from a bris when he saw Suarez walking down Middle Neck Road, with the baby in her arms. Questioning Suarez, she informed him that she was going to a nearby CVS.
Realizing that something was amiss, Rabbi Chayempour made a quick u-turn only to discover that Suarez was nowhere to be found.
Rabbi Chayempour searched for the pair for one hour with his three sons before contacting the Nassau County Police, who were reluctant to consider the case a kidnapping after such a short period of time.
Undaunted, the Chayempour family, along with volunteers rounded up on Facebook and via email, began to canvas the area, hoping that the baby toting Suarez, with her unique long, unkempt silvery hair had caught someone’s attention.
Thankfully she had and as the Chayempours managed to trace Suarez’s footstep, police joined in the search which led from a bus ride, to a local park, to a taxi ride and finally to a Roslyn train station.
Police found the pair at the train station, but Suarez who had attempted to disguise the baby’s appearance by dressing her as a boy in a blue outfit, whose long sleeves covered a very distinctive birthmark on the baby’s arm, insisted that the baby was hers. The Cholov Yisroel formula, with its Hebrew stickers removed was also found in Suarez’s possession.
Suarez refused to surrender the child to the authorities, but was subdued by police and placed under arrest. She will be arraigned today at the county courthouse in Hempstead.
“This was truly chasdei Hashem,” said Tuvel. “The first leads came in literally moments after my mother in law placed a call to the Rebbe’s Ohel.”
The Chayempours are extraordinarily grateful to have Esti back home just two and a half hours after her abduction.
“My in laws want this story to be publicized,” said Tuvel. “While my mother in law never used her maid as a babysitter, there are people who sometimes leave their kids home all day with the maid. People to be more aware of the dangers of leaving children with their cleaning help.”
According to Police, Suarez will be charged with second-degree kidnapping, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a minor and obstructing government administration.
R’ Chaim Kanievsky SHLIT”A said that ‘Levi Aaron’ (kidanpping situation in BP) was mentally ill so ‘kidanpping & murder can’t be applied to it
where the maid saved the child
Goyas are people btw and they have names and they aren’t your property so u need to think before you write. Secondly there is a huge misconception that only a non-jewish person should be an object of suspicion. ALL those caring for your children should be monitored bec you never ever know. This is an unbelievable miracle and thank Gd the ending is wonderful.
Let’s not put all eggs in the same baskets, you have exceptional non Jewish helpers out there, who I consider part of our success in shlichus, without them we couldn’t even accomplish half of what we do. And yes they take amazing care of my children. Meanwhile I’ve had Jewish babysitters who only cared about what food is stocked in your fridge, getting on the phone the minute you leave and how much they were getting paid.
Very truw, and we are very grateful to her for that. But we cant base all maid on that and this is still just a reminder to people how careful we should be.
this sounds like a novel i cant belive this just happened to a shliach! and yes everyone sandra saved moishie so … u never know- each situation must be evaltuated on its own.
it was a goy that saved little Moishele…
Im in shock of how some ppl think. Its absolutley nothing tlo do with jewish or goy. There were signs and the family didnt pay attenion. I went trhu fertitily and it can make one mad. But we dont know her story. Maby her child died? Maybe she never had kids and is all alone? Im not saying what she did is rite. No matter what we go thru we need to keep our head in place. But im trying to say its nothing about a goy or cleaning lady. We should concentrate on the miracle that the baby was… Read more »
ur seriosuly syko – my bloods boiling!!! HOW DARE U BLAME THE PARENTS!!! everyone has a live in , every chabad family w kids, and a chabad house to handle, and PLUS if u read the first article ill see – she got her from an agency – usually agencies are the safest way of going about this!!
Amazing how many geniuses are on this forum that always know the answers, and always have negative comments to make. Your lives must be in such order that you feel compelled to criticize and fix everyone else’s problems… How about a simple Boruch Hashem…
now that the baby is BH, BH found and returned, they should think about kashering the kitchen. Who knows what this lady could have done in there……
happy that all is ok, and we should all learn something from this.
if you have a cleaning lady and you go take a nap – probably every day when you have an infant – then you ARE leaving the baby alone with the goy. Out-of-town shluchos – there are MANY post highschool girls who can’t get into sem. HIRE THEM. And to the fools who say “how can you let a Jew wash your dishes … wash your laundry … clean your bathroom … one minute …isn’t that something millions of respectable Jewish women do everyday in their own homes? Why is it so terrible? Actually, the kohanim even washed up the… Read more »
to #13, #10 was just reacting to #5’s remark.
I have met the Chayempours personally and not only are they nice and normal, but they are people to emulate in many ways. There is absolutely no excuse for the negative comments. don’t go being so holier than thou.
This is CRAZY!!!!!!! B”H the baby is safe and back with her family!! You need to be careful with any stranger doesn’t matter if they are a goy or a Jew.
illigal immigrants, as well as legal immigrants from mexica gautemala and other countries are often hired in jewish homes,.. it is obvious that we do not “trust” the average maid around our silverware/jewelry… but although until now we thought we don’t need to be paranoid leaving our kids with our maid,.. now we see that, it is definetly a good idea to be more carefull.
Parents, plz be carefull, i don’t want see you on collive for anything but simchos!
how can you know when to trust a guy? you need to hire someone, you cant possibly do it all yourself. In many towns there are no Jews to hire
Why is she only being charged with 2nd degree kidnapping? It was clearly intentional and deliberate.
Tammy and Yitzchok are the most wonderful people ,they let me stay by them and wouldn’t accept payment during a few months when I was in crown Heights and was looking for a basement years ago.Their chesed is boundless and Hashem should only give them much brachos ad bli dai and continue watching over them.
stay at home and take care of your own children
Toidah Rabba to # 31! Your camment was said in a stringfhtforward but bacovadik maner!
shmuly will beat her up just like the guys who stole the bikes
why the geshmak in saying comments like number 10?
we must stop being influenced by goishe menality and goishe taynos. its because of this that the Isreali goverment gives away land…
A miracle
Thank you for sharing (as usual) and always being the sweet, wonderful person that you are!!!
Leave it to you to worry about everyone else!
Amazing Shluchim!!!
An old Seminary pal.
Have a wonderful Shabbos, and may ALL be zoche to only NIssim!
for all those who say they wouldn’t leave their children with a goy, I agree. But here the story is she was merely a cleaning lady, and the mother was home, just went to take a short nap. That is very common, and it’s not like she was leaving the baby alone.
B”H, that they were able to find the baby, that’s a real miracle.
Stop arguing and be thankful and BH that the baby is back! Please this is not why the story was published.
Levi Aron who killed a child was a frum jew. Sandra that saved baby Moshe’s life in Mumbai was a non-jew. I’m sorry but I don’t think this has anything to do with Jews and Non-Jews.
While it’s expressed in a harsh way, the point is valid and let’s not let our cleaning ladies get too comfortable in our home. Cleaning help is fine hiring a sleep in to be there compromises on many issues dear to us. Kashruth, Hashkafa, possibly Tznius. We CANNOT be too cautious when it comes to the safety of our kinderlach begashmiyus and b’ruchniyus. Glad it ended well, KSV”T to all in a revealed way.
Thank Hashem this kidnapping ended quickly. I can’t even imagine the utter terror that the family felt in these two and a half hours. Every minute must have been agony. May Hashem spare Klal Yisroel any more suffering and send us Moshiach Now.
shut up
When talk about jew verses goyin are you forgetting that Levi Aron was jewish
i was just going to write that
🙂
As a shlucha in a place very far from new york and the luxuries you enjoy, we have no choice but to hire non jewish help. We would not be able to manage without it. And as far as babysitting goes there is no other choice. There are no frum people here. I know many othr shluchim with the same situation.
Let’s not forget Sandra who helped save a Shliach’s baby! The Rebbe encouraged women, especially Shluchos to get cleaning help. Clearly this story was showing no irresponsibility on the part of the Shluchim but a nes from Hashem. Baruch Hashem they are all safe now.
Tammy is the most amazing person. We absolutely loved her back in school in lubavitch London!!
Us G.G. girls were the luckiest, as we had her ran fabulous programs for us. So many amazing memories (free kosherina pizza!) thanks to her and what a wonderful role model she was for us!!
Her unbelievable middos, a constant smile and fun personality made her a favorite senior!!!
So typical of her giving nature to go public with this!
Being on shluchus – we don’t usually have the luxary of only Jewish babysitters. You would be surprised but a big number of shluchim have goyes who clean & give a hand with the kids – we have no other choice. I don’t think there is anything wrong that I while I serve dinner to my other kids my goye will feed the baby or doing bath time one of us bathe & the other will get the kids dressed. Part of juggling is to have somone to help you.
u r very smart and i agree
My heart goes out to the mother. I can totally see this happening to anyone. Why would she suspect the cleaning lady of such a horrible crime? Who would even think of such a thing.
We all have or have had in the past non-jewish cleaning help. This is juist not something you inagine would happen to you. I guess its a real wake up call to all of us to be more aware.
that maid is mental!!! im soo happy the baby was found!!!! hashem should always help us that way!!!
These shluchim are amazing people. They didn’t leave the maid with the baby. The maid stole their child. Everyone has people cleaning their house. The shlucha didn’t leave her baby with the maid. She specifically doesn’t leave her children with the maid like many others sometimes do. Even with all the trauma she experienced in the past 24 hours she wanted the public to see this story and learn from it . It focuses on the miracles they encountered from when they wrote into the ohel and each step of the way. Please don’t be negative and try to outsmart… Read more »
the mother was home. she did not leave her alone
on what news website?
And it was proven this summer with what ever happened ……
BS:D #13 you are vicious
If you would have read the story correctly you would not be shocked (she was not ment to babysit)
This is nuts! How did she think she would get away with something like this!
The family must be having nightmares!!!!
Why in the world would YOU want to make a yid work for YOU as a maid think about that
Have you forgotten who Levi Aron was? (Or better yet, WHAT he is…). One needs to be cautious and careful with ANYONE and EVERYONE.
i dont think she should have life in jail. it was horrible, but i dont know how to explain
Boruch Hashem for the way this story ended, could have been a lot different
I am shocked that anyone would defend leaving a baby with a non jewish maid. I have bh a large family and would never do that. Sure, I have a lady who cleans but that’s all. My children are too orecious to me.
No bail for maid charged in kidnapping!
Do you realize your statement has nothing to do with the situation AT HAND? What kind of stupid remark is that “not all goyim are bad and not all Jews are good… ” A baby was kidnapped. We don’t care if it was Jew or Goy. A baby was kidnapped and B”H it was found. You don’t comment on this miracle as an open miracle? But you go off track with your professional dim-wit remark of yours? Hey man, maybe you are missing having a kid or grandchild around, get your mental state together and comment smartly. Sheesh.
Get a life #5.
not all goyim are bad and not all jews are good, dont be so naive!
because only a goya will work for $10.00 and hour and some even for less
try and hire yidish help lol you cant afford it and they wont do the dishes etc etc
I think that’s a littlE extreeme
There is nothing wrong woith having a cleaning lady
And it said that they didn’t want her to babysit it was not part of her job
most pple have a goy cleaning lady!! its very hard to find a jewish one!
I’m freaking out their daughter is in my class! Bh everything is ok!
WHY IN THE WORLD DOES A FRUM (SHLIACH NO LESS) HIRE A GOY TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR KOSHER HOME??? ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE CHILDREN AROUND THAT AT BEST CAN BE INFLUE NCED WRONGLY, AT WORST WHAT WE SAW. MAY OTHERS TAKE A LESSON NEVER TO TRUST A GOY WITH YOUR HOME OR CHILDREN.
Really makes you think twice about leaving a baby with the maid. I don’t think ill be doing that anytime soon…
WOW! Baruch Hashem the baby was found, what a miracle!!
poshut amazing!!!
B”H the turnout was a good one
BH. Everything turned out well!!!!
