Popular author and speaker about learning disabilities Rick Lavoie will be addressing Lubavitchers of Crown Heights at Nechama’s Closet Chinese Auction 5771 – 2011 on Sunday, March 27.
Lavoie started a school in Massachusetts specifically targeted towards learning disabled children and has written several books on the subject of learning disabilities and their impact on children.
The F.A.T. City Project (1989) was a documentary that created a mock environment where everyday people could experience the Frustration, Anxiety, and Tension of being a learning disabled child.
Lavoie will be introduced by Rabbi Shea Hecht, Chairman of the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE) and a marriage and education counselor.
“I’m deeply honored to be introucing him,” Rabbi Hecht told COLlive.com. “I think the Poker Chips Theory is a video everyone should be watching. My secretary has been sending out a link to some 400 mosdos in the U.S.”
The emcee of the evening will be Shimon Waronker, headmaster of The New American Academy, PS 770, an innovative new public school in Brooklyn, NY.
This 2 hour workshop entitled “The Motivation Breakthrough – Six Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child” will take place at Campus Chomesh, 470 Lefferts Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11225 between 2-4 PM.
The cost is is $25 (and receive a free $10 ticket for use at the auction).

The concept of “poker chips” can be applied to all students. A great video and a real eye opener for people who don’t fully grasp what children with LD face every day.
Would there be a religious or philosophical reason discouraging or forbidding such attendance by a rebbe or teacher? Or would it be up to each one as they choose? Could someone overseeing educational issues take a look at this topic and consider its merit? Is the educational system in Lubavitch monitored for such abuses or ignorance mentioned in some of the comments I have seen on this issue? as a child my mom let me watch this video. and i have to say that i loved it. thats when i found a part that i realized my mom used on me very often and i wasn’t so happy b/c he never showed the counter of that move. ether way it was one of the best video’s i have ever watched.

I would like to thank Nechama’s Closet for bringing this amazing opportunity to Crown Heights. From what I understand participating in a Rick Lavoie workshop usually runs between 80-100 dollars. We are so fortunate to have him come right to us. Great work, can’t wait!!
