Mrs. Joni Nathanson has shared her encounter with Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson OBM, the mother of the Rebbe, in a candid video before boarding a flight.
Nathanson lived at 1418 President St. in Crown Heights, and how her mother would regularly rush down to the Rebbetzin’s apartment to help operate the toaster.
She recalled being afraid to enter their apartment building because of a “crazy” neighbor after school. With her mother still at work, Nathanson would be personally greeted by the Rebbetzin, who would safely walk her in.
The Rebbetzin would also inquire about what she learned that day in school.
Speaking in 2011 to JEM, Nathanson said that because most of the Jewish kids around went to Jewish schools, she always felt like an outsider among them. The one person in her life who accepted her unconditionally was Rebbetzin Chana.
