Pesach is often the season when people schlep new dishes from the store to a neighborhood keilim mikvah to toivel them for everyday use in their homes.
But with outdoor movement restricted this year, many were worried about not having the option.
The Beth Din of Montreal / Vaad Ha’ir of Montreal, led by Av Beth Din Rabbi Yonasan Binyomin Weiss and Director Rabbi Saul Emanuel, came announced this week a solution for the predicament.
“During this challenging time, it is not always possible to Toivel Keilim, due to the restrictions that are currently in effect. Many people are making Pesach for the first time and are purchasing new Keilim, making it even more challenging,” they acknowledged.
The halachic solution they offer is Mechiras Keilim – the sale of the new utensils, pots, pans, cooking and other appliances to a gentile, thereby making it his possession which is then given on loan to the Jewish person.
The process, similar to the sale of chometz which is done before Pesach, is done online and with the intention that it is only for a short period of time of 30 days.
“During this time, one may use these items, which are borrowed from the Non-Jew,” the Montreal rabbis said. “However, after 30 days, these are then returned to the original ownership of the person that purchased them, and must then be toiveled.”
The rabbis, who also head the widely accepted Montreal Kosher (MK) certification, asked the public to complete a form online.
Each day at 6:00 pm Eastern Time, up until and including Monday, April 6th, all of the forms received, and all of the included on those forms, will be sold, they said.
“At 6:30 pm on the day your form was submitted, you are allowed to use these items,” they stated.
They added not to discard any of the items and that disposable aluminum pans may be included in the sale for those who wish.

Rabbi Braun basically said this a week ago on his daily Timeless Memories.
This is a well known solution whenever a keilim mikva is not available. Another solution is to revoke ownership of the utensils (make them hefker). This is OLD news, nothing new here.
If you make them hefker and then use them, aren’t your taking ownership of the items again, thereby needing to tovel it?
Take a chill… Not everything has to be brand new like your new set of dishes… I found this article very helpful, and I’m sure many others have as well.
Besuros Tovos!
is that there is a form you can fill out so you can actually do this
Are we allowed to do this form from anywhere, not only if we are in MOntreal but anywhere in the US?
Ma pitom “Found”, shtait clur in shulchan arouch!!
So how can one sell the chametz pot they bought to another goy for Pesach? Unless it doesn’t need to be sold again.
We don’t sell our utensils to the non-Jew before Pesach. We only sell the loose Chametz and the Chametz stuck to the utensils (but specifically NOT the utensils themselves, as that would then require Tevila when reaquiring the Chometz after Pesach)
That’s incorrect.
The Rebbe spoke at length at a farbrengen Acheron Shel Pesach that we sell even the pots and utensils because physically the kailim never left your home so it doesn’t require Tevila.
That is true according to some poskim. However, the Baal Hatanya, in his Seder Mechiras Chometz, specifically mentions selling the actual keilim, and that is the standard Chabad minhag.
Maybe this form is to help us out with the new Pesach dishes that we bought and can’t toivel. It’s only valid for a month which means that next year we will need to toivel these dishes before using them. We don’t sell these dishes in mechiras chametz.
Oldest trick in the book
Thank you for publicizing this and for making it so accessible to us. I heard of this idea before but don’t know any non jews whom I could make this arrangment with, so this online form is super helpful
I asked a Rav about giving keilim to a goy so I won’t have to toivel them last week. He said it only works if the goy makes a kinyan on the actual keilim. Like he needs to pick up the box with the keilim inside. How does this work without a kinyan?
You can make commercial kinyanim via the internet. I don’t believe there is any need to transact today by lifting goods! Commercial Kinyan methods are valid!
Does the Keilim sale contract need to be done with an oroiv kablon like the regular mechiras chometz Contract?
Just ask someone who has recovered to toival for you
