Rabbi Hillel (Hakohen) Katzman, a longtime resident of Crown Heights, passed away on Tuesday, 12 Adar II, 5779.
He was 86.
Rabbi Katzman was born in Malachovka, Russia, a suburb of Moscow. He became an orphan at a young age, and immigrated to Samarkand along with his brother.
He and his brother were the first Talmidim in the Lubavitch Yeshiva in Samarkand.
He immigrated to the United States in 1952, where he married his wife Mattel (nee Silber), with the Rebbe’s involvement in his Shidduch.
He was known as a very learned man, and a devoted Chosid.
He is survived by his wife, Mattel, and children, Esti Katz – Crown Heights, Pessy Gansburg – S. Paulo, Brazil, Moishe Katzman – Crown Heights, Chani Edelkopf – Crown Heights, Dini Groner – Pomona, NY, Rivky Teichman – Crown Heights and Raizy Cohen – Lakewood, NJ.
The levaya will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, leaving Shomrei Hadas at 12:00 pm and passing by 770 at 1:00 pm.
The family will be sitting Shiva on Motzai Shabbos, Sunday and Monday. Getting up Tuesday.
