A new book is highlighting decades of work by Lubavitch Yeshiva students and their teacher to enhance Torah learning and explore the depths of Chassidus and Halacha.
“Sefer Hayovel – Hoaros Ubiurim,” published a few months ago in hardcover, is the culmination of 1000 booklets known as Hearos and written by bochurim, Crown Heights residents and even Shluchim.
Publishing began in 5733 when the Rebbe called on students of Lubavitch Yeshivos worldwide to jot down their chidushim in whatever subject they were learning at the time.
In an introduction in the new book, the driving force behind Hearos Rabbi Avrohom Gerlitzky thanked and praised all those bochurim who were members of the editorial board during their years at Oholei Torah.
“I remember that in 5740 some bochurim ‘demanded’ that we do a weekly,” Rabbi Gerlitzky recalled how the bi-weekly turned into a weekly publication read in Brooklyn Jewish communities and around the world.
“I told them a weekly was not practical. But they committed themselves and have succeeded, Baruch Hashem, until this very day,” he added.
Those bochurim, inspired by a sicha of the Rebbe demanding to strengthen Yiddishkeit, were Eliezer Shemtov (today a Shliach in Uruguay), Levi Mochkin (today in Australia) with the help of Moshe Drizin of Crown Heights.
But Hoaros itself began earlier, in 5733, with Moshe Wilhelm (today Head Shliach in Oregon) and Yosef Yitzchak Shagalow (today in Los Angeles).
“I would like to thank from depths of my heart all the dear tmimim who I merited to work with thoughout the years,” Rabbi Gerlitzky wrote.
In the process of balancing quality and deadline, Rabbi Gerlitzky said he was amazed to discover the talent of bochurim in writing, editing and producing “even more than I expected.”
Over the years the Rebbe showed great interest in Hoaros and reviewed some 14 sichos for publication. All of them appear in the new book, some with copies of the Rebbe’s hand writing and notes the Rebbe sent to the editorial board.
The book was edited by Menachem Mendel Mishulovin and Levi Yitzchak Raichik with the help of Menachem Mendel Diskin, Menachem Mendel Marasow, Sholom Ber Piekarsky and Menachem Mendel Jacobs.
There were many challenges over the years, even from fellow staff in Oholei Torah, but as Rabbi Gerlitzky noted, “Printing this is not only my simcha and the editorial board’s, and not only the thousands of readers, but the simcha to the Rebbe.”
