Rabbi Adin Even-Israel (Steinsaltz) was recently in Montreal for an exclusive speaking engagement at Chabad of Westmount, where he addressed a variety of topics of interest.
In a conversation format with Mr. Murray Dalfen, a local philanthropist, the soft-spoken acclaimed Talmud commentator delivered his remarks with his trademark humor and poignancy.
Rabbi Even-Israel addressed the situation in Israel, and lectured on the nature of the soul, the importance of the study of Talmud and the impact of the Alter Rebbe and the Tanya.
He also discussed the biography he is currently writing about the Rebbe, about whom he spoke with particular reverence and passion, calling his greatness “unparalleled.” He stressed that the Rebbe’s life mission was to bring about the coming of Moshiach.
Defining a Jew as “one with a Jewish grandchild,” he urged the audience to help stem the tide of assimilation and not leave the task only to Chabad rabbis and rebbetzins, such as the Westmount Shluchim Rabbi Yossi and Devorah Leah Shanowitz.
In his whirlwind day at Chabad of Westmount, Rabbi Even-Israel also met privately with judges and leading members of the Montreal legal community on the Talmud and its structure of law.
