Curious why this is such a big deal when most schools are pushing kids out that are “out of the box” what about then.
Guess we will turn the other cheek for only certain things

Hear you. Let’s talk to Hashem.

Whenever there is a gezera from a government or something, klal Yisrael gets a reminder to turn inward, do our own teshuva. For that we need to talk, each one, to one’s own mashpia to figure out our own improvements, and above all, talk to Hashem. It’s so challenging for yeshivas to be run optimally rather than with the tragic, so painful issue you described. We need blessings for things like voucher programs as Martin Luther king III (son of civil rights leader) is pushing for to improve education for non Jewish students to go to private schools because government… Read more »

It’s a big deal because we can’t create substantial change if the choices are taken from us. I do agree that this needs to be the beginning of a longer conversation within our school systems. Remember that we aren’t signing that there shouldn’t be math and science and English. We’re signing so that WE decide that and not the local public school system. I don’t think anyone signing this isn’t aware that our schools do need other improvements, but the way to get it is not to take aware out ability to change

Schools are within their right to recommend other options if students are not cutting it. What we need instead is alternatives. We cannot expect schools that are overwhelmed as it is, to take on even more challenges that they are not capable of dealing with, and that will affect the education of the rest of the students/kids. It is like saying to an employer who has an employee who is not doing their job that they cannot fire them because they would end up homeless. Instead of inviting the government into our schools, we need to come together and support… Read more »

A child in school is not like an employee who “isn’t cutting it”. The school has a responsibility to gain necessary tools to cater to EACH child. Even children who weren’t born to sit and follow orders, and weren’t popped out of a cookie cutter. Yes chinuch is challenging, and when you have a school, you have a responsibility for EVERY child, not just the ones that follow directions perfectly. Especially in NY there is no excuse, there are so many services that a child can get, to get them the help they need. I’m not talking about extreme cases.… Read more »

R Braun is advocating for the chinuch of our children yet he, community “leaders”, and school administrators all looked the other way in 2019 as hundreds of children were removed from their schools and Torah education in Crown Heights after NYS repealed the use of religious exemptions to vaccines for school attendance. Hundreds of CH children and their families were affected yet none of the above mentioned could be bothered about the continuation of Torah education for those children. When will they rectify their deafening silence over those children who were prohibited from learning in our educational institutions? It’s been… Read more »

Appreciate that you made this point and showed this connection! I didnt realize it was to such an extent that kids were thrown out for not being vaccinated. Also there are medical reasons as well for non vaccination

Kudos

Yes and it is near to impossible to get a medical exemption in NY ! Many Physicians simply won’t write one due to perceived professional repercussions! Shame on anyone who was fully aware of this when the religious exemption was under fire and stood by indifference!

What About The Schools Them self

Such an important part of the discussion. We indeed need schools to step up for ALL our children. By signing this hopefully it’s the beginning of a longer conversation that will address this as well

What if I have no kids?

Today in Jewish history

“23 Iyar 3619 – 142 B.C.E.:

Shimon Hachashmonai expelled the Bnei Chakra (the Syrians and their allies, the Hellenized Jews) from Yerushalayim. The Chakra ([Greek] akra – fortress) was the fortress of Yerushalayim, (known as the Citadel), and in it was occupied by the Greek garrison. Even when Yehudah Hamaccabi captured Yerushalayim he was unable to capture the Akra, and its occupiers exerted a constant threat against the inhabitants of Yerushalayim. Only in the days of Shimon Hachashmonai was the Akra captured. The date was observed as a Yom Tov, as mentioned in Megillat Taanit.” ( from Torah Tots). May the “Greeks” and the “Hellenists” remove their influence from “Yerushalayim “, the chinuch of Jewish children.

Walk and chew (koshere) gum AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!

Enough of this black and white polarized thinking. “Secular studies = shmad” was true for Russia’s Jews historically, but it was NEVER TRUE for Western European Jews or for Jews in the U.S.
Successful frume yiddishe kreizen like modern Orthodox Yeshivos and Lubavitch Yeshiva Schools of Pittsburgh are the PROOF in the pudding!

Look in the mirror at the saturated shlichus market; look at the yeshiva students who can’t do sales or chinuch and want a chance at a parnasa. Have some rachmones for YOUR OWN KIDS!!!

Rivky Boyarsky

We aren’t signing that there shouldn’t be math and science and English. We’re signing so that WE decide that and not the local public school system. BH there are many schools who provide varying amounts of secular education to fit different parents needs

Walk and chew (koshere) gum AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!

Are you serious? Did you even read the proposed rules? This is not about whether our kids should learn secular studies or not. That is something many of our local schools do offer, and guess what? Parents should have a choice to send their kids to those schools if they so choose, but to say that we trust and want the State to decide how things and what is taught in our schools is dead wrong! We live in America. We have choice and rights, and one of those rights are the ability to send our children to schools we… Read more »

Observation

It doesn’t feel like America anymore when perfectly healthy children are kicked out of school over a pluera of vaccine mandates!

Parents

Can teach their kids anything they want. They can even teach about the second amendment and the buffalo shooting, unlike the NYS regents

Shmad

Even conservative hero Curtis sliwa said he wanted yeshivas to teach evolution and other beliefs

You teach my son ONE language. Any language. Teach my son the skills of any languge – vocabulary, and sentence structure, and nuanced expression…in ANY language!
I don’t insist on his native language, English, which he (at age 15) speaks like an immigrant – teach him to be proficient in HEBREW, for Heaven’s sake. Or YIDDISH.
But teach him A language!

Do we have a deal?
