Reb Yeshaya Arye (Shaye) Treitel, who helped in the establishment of many Chabad institutions in Montreal, Canada passed away on Friday night.
He was 78.
R’ Shaye, who was born to a Hungarian family, became a devoted chossid of the Rebbe after encountering Chabad as a young man in the early 1950’s.
He was mekushar to the Rebbe, and his whole life was dedicated to giving the Rebbe nachas, supporting the Rebbe’s causes and institutions in any way he could.
Owner of a successful textile business, Treitel was integral to the growth of Lubavitch in Montreal, involved in the establishment and supporting the moisdos such as Camp Gan Israel, Beth Rivkah Academy girls school, Camp Pardas Chana and others.
He was also a supporter of many Chabad centers in Canada and abroad. “Nobody was ever turned away,” a family member said.
He was particularly proud of the establishment of the Montreal Torah Center in the Hampstead neighborhood and run by his son and son-in-law. He helped build and support its growth and expansion into one of the largest and most beautiful Chabad centers in the world.
His company, Transitexin on Parc Avenue in Montreal, may have been the first business to establish a ‘Lunch and Learn’ program, which is now popular around the world. His program grew so large that he had to rent additional office space to accommodate the class. The weekly learning session for businesspeople was the first taste of Judaism for many who later became baalei Teshuva.
A humble and kind person, R’ Shaye was known as someone who always had a smile and a kind word for others.
He is survived by his wife Malka (Tuky) Treitel and children Chaim Treitel – Montreal, Nechama New – Montreal, Shterni Rosenfeld – Montreal and Itchy Treitel – Montreal.
He is also survived by his sister Mari (Malka) Salzberg.
