Fool me twice…
A yarmulka-wearing panhandler who has been known to harass passersby on the streets of the Crown Heights neighborhood was once again arrested.
What got him arrested was his go-to method of getting his hands on easy cash – robbing charity boxes that are typically placed in local Jewish-owned stores and businesses.
This isn’t his first time being cuffed by NYPD officers.
Two weeks ago, the man was caught stealing the pushkas in the Prime Sandwich restaurant and Uniquely Chic children’s clothing store, both located on Kingston Avenue.
A resident of the low-income housing on E. New York Avenue, the man was caught on surveillance camera walking off with a pushka.
“He didn’t go for the cash register. He’s not smart enough and isn’t doing it to get rich,” said one of the store managers.
The man has been released shortly thereafter, free to continue his work as a nuisance to residents and business owners.
His latest target was Sushi Spot II on Kingston Avenue and Empire Blvd. Cameras show him walking in during clean up time after store hours on Tuesday and hurrying out with a pushka in hand.
One store owner told COLlive.com: “They arrest him and then release him. The guy isn’t stable and is drugged up. It’s important that people call the police when they see him causing problems. Hopefully, he’ll understand that Crown Heights isn’t the place for him.”

The system and the community leaders cannot do anything to fix these type of quality of life issues, the police at best can arrest this guy, he will see a judge and most likely be out and back on the streets within a few days. If the judge ships him to a mental ward, he will be there for a week or two or three, and again he will be back on the streets. There is no structure within the system to really help these people. These menacing crackheads need a good beating so they will be scared to come… Read more »
