This Purim, the year 8 of Yeshiva College of Melbourne decided that they wanted to do something legendary that will bring the joy of Purim to the entire city of Melbourne.
Their Shliach, Levi Druin, had an idea: In order to unify the class, and to make sure everyone in the class was doing the right thing on Purim, he decided to get the entire class to dress up together and have something fun and productive organized for the day.
After many days and hours of thinking the “class committee” struck gold: They would all dress up as living statues, and the money they would collect would go to Tzedakah!
After another “class committee” meeting, it was decided to include a dance which would attract more attention from passers-by. Not only that, but they would travel around Melbourne in style: they would drive around in a massive party bus!
The class was divided up into 4 groups (costume, dance, route, and fundraising), and everyone got to work arranging their part. The dance committee chose the Purim song by the Maccabeats because not only does it tell the entire story of Purim, it is also a great song to dance to. After weeks of practice, in their own free time, the class had learned their dance and was ready to go! Naturally, numerous pairs of Teffilin were brought to wrap up everyone who stopped to watch their performance.
After doing a couple performances in school, year 8 left Yeshiva and went to thank Tzvi in Astoria who sponsored most of the costumes. While walking to the Gopin residence for a delicious breakfast, they rocked up Carlisle and Balaclava Rd with their dancing and music blasting! They boarded the party bus which was waiting for them, and began dancing and singing and just going crazy!
Arriving at Chadstone Mall, they performed for an appreciative crowd of shoppers. Walking through the mall, holding signs saying “Happy Purim”, they attracted a lot of positive attention which led 2 men to put on Teffilin making a massive Kiddush Hashem.
They hopped back on the party bus and headed to the Emmy Monash Nursing Home where they delighted over a 100 residents with their amazing show.
Driving back to St Kilda, they stopped at the Marcus residence for a rest and some hot dogs. On their way to their final destination, they were surprised with a quick stop at Galactic Circus Arcade Centre! After enjoying themselves, and partying one last time, they said goodbye to the party bus and headed out to perform in Fed Square! They were amazing and entertained crowds of over 400 people!
Overall, the boys had an amazing Purim, spending their time spreading Purim joy, doing mivtzoim, and having a great time themselves.
A special thank you to HaShliach Mendel Blesofsky who came along and helped make the entire day a success. Also a major thank you to Chabad Youth who helped sponsor the event.
