A thousand Jews, mostly from the former Soviet Union, celebrated Purim at events organized by Chabad of W. Brighton Beach – Manhattan Beach with the Shluchim, Rabbi Zushe and Esther Winner, Rabbi Avraham and Shula Winner, Rabbi Moshe Dovid and Leah Winner and Rabbi Shimmy and Sarah Silver.
Sunday morning, five hundred gathered for the Purim at the Circus, at the Seabreeze Jewish Center, featuring acrobats, contortionists and jugglers that kept children and adults alike spellbound, this was followed by outdoor moon-bounces, balloonists and Purim treats galore. Every person performed the Mitzvos of Purim, some for the first time.
Just a few hours later, towards evening, a beautiful Purim Gala Banquet awaited the community at the Sephardic Hall in Manhattan Beach. The adults enjoyed a Nigun presentation by the costumed Rabbis followed by much L’chaim’s and farbrenging late into the night.
One of the highlights was when dozens rose up to sing a song about the Rebbe to a tune from the Soviet era.
Alex “Sasha” Zukin commented about the Purim celebration, “Rabbi, on that day of Purim my friends eradicated their ‘Amalek’ and were so proud to be Jewish.”
