Residents of the Linksfield neighborhood of Johannesburg witnessed the roads being lined with Jewish people showing their pride and unity, as thousands joined the Lag B’Omer Jewish Unity Parade, with participants from many Jewish day schools and Shuls.
The event is run under the auspices of Chabad House Johannesburg, directed by Rabbi Dovid Masinter and Rabbi Michoel Katz, and was produced by Rabbi Pini and Rochie Pink, who were assisted by Michoel Benjamin and Menachem Biston who have spent the year working at Chabad House. The event was organized in close coordination with the city’s leading Jewish schools and institutions.
The event kicked off with a rally at Protea Park in Linksfield and was opened with greetings from Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein and Head Shliach to South Africa Rabbi Mendel Lipskar. Children from various Jewish schools led the crowd with the 12 pessukim, and everyone enjoyed a thrilling motorbike stunt show, followed by international star Choni G who got the crowd buzzing with some lively songs.
The parade set off through the streets of Linksfield, with floats made by the Torah Academy nursery, primary, girls’ high and boys’ along with a float by Yeshiva College, Chabad of Illovo and the Chassidim Shul,, The ‘ChaiFM mobile’ Police Marching band, Pretoria High Gumboot dances and many other exciting features also joined the parade.
