This year the Jews on the island of Florianopolis, including locals and Israeli backpackers were able to participate in a Chanuka party, thanks to Chabad of Parana headed by Rabbi Dubrawsky.
The small congregation had another reason to celebrate this Chanukah, as the party was also a ‘chanukas habayis’ for a new Israeli hostel/motel and center which was recently opened.
The center will host Shabbat meals and will have kosher food available for the thousands of Israeli backpackers visiting the island throughout the year.
The event began with a speech about Chanukah by Rabbi Mendy Labkowski, followed by the lighting of the Menorah.
A mezuzah was then affixed to the new center’s front door and a farbrengen continued into the night.
