The story of a young woman who is slowly losing her sight and hearing because of Usher Syndrome III, a rare disorder.
People with Usher syndrome type III experience progressive hearing loss and vision loss beginning in the first few decades of life, according to Genetics Home Reference. Usher syndrome is thought to be responsible for 3-6% of all childhood deafness and about 50% of deaf-blindness in adults.
Rebecca Alexander, a psychotherapist and author, speaks with candor and without self-pity about the progression of the disease, current research into a cure, the challenges in her life, and how she experiences the world.
