The British Channel Four has published segments of the first interrogation of Mumbai terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab, the sole terrorist who remained alive and revealed the kidnappers conversation. “We were all going to die,” he admitted.
The Channel Four program showed footage of Kasab’s interrogation combined with new video footage of the terrorist attack in November.
Here Kasab recounts the instructions he received and his admission that his father had urged him to join the terrorists:
“Where else have you done operations like this?” police asked.
Nowhere else. This is my first one. I haven’t been anywhere else.”
“You mean you have a shootout and you die.”
“Didn’t you feel pity for these people you’re killing?
“Yes, I did but I have to do these things.”
“What’s your gang called? Your team?” asked one policeman.
Kasab seems not to understand.
“Your organization, your gang, your team?”, some of the other officers round the hospital bed chimed in.
“Oh… It’s Lashkar e Toiba.”
When asked about the massacre at the railway station, Kasab is equally direct:
“They told us we had to do this job,” explained Kasab.
“What job?” asked the cop.
“The VT station job” – CST station is still known to many by its old colonial name VT, Victoria Terminus.
“What do you mean by ‘the job’?”
“I was supposed to kill people there.”
Next the policeman tries to figure out what the terrorists’ exit strategy was: “After completing your job, where were you going to go?”
‘We were all going to die,’ said Kasab matter-of-factly.
“How’s that?” asked the cop.
“He told us we’d be going to heaven,” replied Kasab.
Kasab, who is currently on trial in Mumbai for terrorism, conspiracy and waging war, reveals he was effectively sold to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba by his father.
“My father told me we don’t have money. These people make a lot of money and you’ll also make a lot of money. You won’t have to do anything complex. If you do this, we won’t be poor anymore. We can marry your brothers and sisters. Look at these people living the good life. You can be like them, he said.”
“Your dad said this?”
“Yes. He used to sell yoghurt and potato snacks in the street. They gave him a hundred thousand for this. We were all supposed to die. They said we would go to heaven.”
A segment also refers to when the terrorists took over the Chabad House. Several of the terrorists held two Jewish hostages, and then they were told.
“What, shoot at them?” one of them asked.
“Yes, do it. Sit them down, and shoot them in the back of the head,” was the answer.
