Among the many daughters of Chabad Shluchim who convened in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights this past weekend with their mothers was Devorah Freundlich of Beijing, China, whose smile was more radiant than ever.
She was glad to be at the 5 day program “Kinus Tzeirei Hashluchos,” hanging out with their peers, sharing Shabbos meals and late-night pillow talk during which they compare notes about their lives as junior Shluchos with each other.
But she was even more happy of have 3 of her Shluchim Online School classmates beside her. And she knows all about getting them there.
Just weeks ago, her friends – two from Australia and one from Ukraine – were not planning to make the trip as the cost of airfare was too high.
So the 8th grader decided to put her fundraising skills to work to cover the flight costs.
Her idea, to bake custom cakes in any variety of shapes and themes, and sell them at $30 a piece, took off.
“My goal is to raise enough money so I will be able to spend this special time with all my classmates,” Devorah told Lubavitch.com. “I am doing something I love – baking, to help out my friends, what could be better?”
Her big boost came when she presented a cake at the Shabbos table of her parents – Rabbi Shimon and Dini Freundlich.
Guests at the table—many themselves from overseas—were so impressed by the young girl’s pluck, they decided to donate money to her cause. One gentleman donated the funds for one round trip ticket.
And her custom cakes—shaped as dolls, police trucks and snowmobiles—has paid off. $5000 was eventually raised.
This weekend, the online classmates, otherwise living miles away from each other, were united and cherished every moment together furthering their friendship despite geographic distances.
Man, Devora this seems like only yesterday.

The apple doesnt fall far from the tree…such a special child can only be raised by special parents.
may we all learn from her about the pure act of kindness and now lets get on with it and “pay it forward”
Beautiful!
Send it in to the Power of Jewish Children!
what i find very special is that this girl baked cakes and collected the money. not like when my niece payed the tickets from her own money, and raised money as well in her own way. (A much lesser sum, only $600 though)
