Mr. Mattisyahu (Marty) Kurlander, an attorney, passed away on Thursday, 9 Cheshvan, 5776 (10/22/2015).
He was 85 years old and gallantly fought a dreaded disease for two years.
Marty Kurlander was well known to frum Jews around New York and particularly to Anash of Crown Heights as a lawyer who cared and went the extra mile for his clients and fellow Orthodox Jews.
He was instrumental in helping people in need and was the “go-to person” in saving people’s homes in the recent turbulent times. A gifted “old school” lawyer he was able to craft agreements and settlements for Anash in need who were in seemingly impossible situations.
“Marty saved many people’s houses and businesses without charging them exorbitant fees,” a Crown Heights resident told COLlive. “He was always willing to help.”
A veteran of the Korean War, Marty was a proud Jew and a decades long resident of Mill Basin, Brooklyn.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis and three sons.
The family will be sitting Shiva at his home in Mill Basin, 2760 East 63rd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11234 on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 12 noon to 5:30pm. Mincha and Maariv at 5:40 pm. resuming shiva from 7:30 to 10:00 pm.

Marty was a real Tzadik. He helped people and did not push for the money. helping one was first on his list and if you were able to pay he took. otherwise he was thrilled that he was able to help
