If there was any doubt, the Jewish community in Scotland in ready and set for the Jewish new year.
Some 100 people attended the Lubavitch’s Annual Pre Yom Tov event held at Eastwood House in Glasgow and included a tasty lunch lunch catered by L’Chaim’s Restaurant run by Sora Jacobs.
The main attraction were the hand-on activities for the young and old, such as the Tzivos Hashem Shofar Making Factory with Rabbi Yossi Simon of London, Challah, honey cake and tzimmes making with Tzirl Jacobs.
A variety of 20 types of kosher wine were on sale, as well as Judaica, kosher cookbooks, Machzorim, Challah covers and more. There was even apples and honey for those kveling for its taste.
Rabbi Uzzi Brown, a sofer (scribe) from Manchester, was there as well for an on-the-spot checking of mezuzahs from local homes and businesses.
And when he was done with that, Rabbi Brown was tasked with another mission: The beginning of the writing of a new Sefer Torah commissioned by the Jacobs family to honor their parents, Rabbi Chaim and Sora Jacobs‘ 44 years of dedicated service to Scottish Jewry as Shluchim.
Men present had the opportunity to write a letter in the new Torah with the Brown’s help. For many of them, this was the first time they participated in this special mitzvah. Letters can be purchased for a nominal cost of £5 and for children £1. In USA, call 917 559 6044.
All in all, it was an afternoon full of learning, warmth and emotion for all present.
