I was walking on Montgomery between Kingston and Albany this afternoon with a couple of friends. I noticed an older white male in a red coat and black beanie, holding cards in his hand.
I’m not sure what about him made me suspicious, but I saw that he stood to one side and watched to make sure that I and my friends (all three of us are adult women) passed him by.
I then turned around to see him approach two young boys behind us and give them the cards. He appears to be a missionary targeting children who are unaccompanied by adults.
I’m sorry that I didn’t think to take a picture of him, but can you please publish his description and remind parents to warn their children against taking anything from strangers. Thank you!
Just because they’re doing what they believe in doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be careful and keep an extra eye on our children .
This lady didn’t write an article against them and their beliefs, rather posted information that many people would feel safer to know, and appreciate.
Also, waiting for adults not to be around is a very suspicious behavior and usually someone that does that knows he’s doing something wrong.
Are you saying that where this Shlucha/Shliach lives, is considered a bad place?
Maybe they are lighting up the country they are in, just because Crown Heights is holy, so is Yerushalayim, and there are many arabs there
I saw two young Jewish teenagers, seemingly missioanaries, asking people if they were Jewish on Eastern Parkway just the other day. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife.
The Christian missionaries are only able to outwit you if you have no knowledge of basic logic and a poor understanding of Tanach, also it would help if you can speak well.
Teaching 7 Noachide Laws is not a novelty of the Rebbe.
It’s a known and clear psak halach/ruling in the Rambam – quoted by the Rebbe – that yiden have a obligation to teach non-yiden about them.
The Rebbe simply said that in our modern and open society we can fulfill this obligation because non-jews are receptive as we see, while in the past when jews were persecuted it would be impossible and dangerous.
Forty years ago the missionaries were strong. Today there is an increase in atheism among the millennial population. You don’t see missionaries as active as much. I recall when I grew up first ten years of my life in crown heights fifty plus years ago and every shabbos afternoon on Kingston ave corner Brooklyn stood a missionary group with a microphone yelling their nonsense. Of course at that time the neighborhood has many European holocaust survivors and their kids living there. But we yelled back at the missionaries. Today not many jewish youth are joining missionaries. They are all prone… Read more »
Doesn’t chabad do exactly the same thing they’re doing? We believe our beliefs, they believe theirs.
Easy, this is America.
are you familiar with Lubavitch or let alone of any Jewish history? If you were you’d know the difference between what lubavitchers do and missionaries. Missionaries have literally destroyed cultures around the world not just Jewish ones. If your Jewish you’d know the stakes are high when it comes to protecting ourselves. I don’t understand how someone could even take what the Rebbe wanted us to do and even compare it with this.
When I was in high school we had lecturers come in and teach us how to deal with missionaries, the best solution is to completely ignore them. They are professionally trained to argue and out wit you, which can cause some people to falter and allow them to win their case. So seriously just ignore them and throw their pamphlets in the garbage. Missionaries come to my neighborhood weekly, I literally ignore the door when they knock though they visibly see me going about my business in my home from the window. After a few weeks they got the hint… Read more »
Lubavitchers on mivtzoim are ‘not’ proselytizing at all! The Sheva Mitzvas B’nai Noach are simply reminding or re-educating non-Jews on basic laws of civility, morality, etc, which it is a sad fact, by reason of the current state of affairs in the world, and a necessity! Not at all trying to convert anyone, as some of them actually try to do!
The word proselytize is not the issue. Yes, it would be nice if the goyim learned the 7 Noahide laws and followed them, but unless we’re trying to fight their fire with kedushadig fire, trying to bring people over to our beliefs (and the Noahide laws are part of our beliefs) makes me very uncomfortable.
Proselytising means bringing someone over to your beliefs.
It is forbidden in the Jewish religion …that’s why they make it so hard for geirim begore they take them on.
The Rebbe said that goyim must learn the 7 Noahide laws.
Why don’t you see what he said….(so many times.)
That is ALL the guidance we need
Haha wow you really don’t know the definition of the word “proselytize”. I suggest you look it up before accusing Chabad of proselytizing.
I really don’t get how Lubavitchers can get upset about Christian missionaries when they proselytize the 7 Noahide Laws all day long to non-Jews. If they don’t want people to proselytize to them then maybe they shouldn’t proselytize to others. Just my opinion. That being said, I don’t proselytize to anyone. I am not dishing out religious advice unless someone asks for it.
I was once on chanuka mivtzoim alone when I was 13-14 and someone came over to me to make a shpiel. I laughed at him and said something like “I’m busy doing the opposite of what you’re doing. Please go away.”
you aren’t allowed to be melamed zchus on reshaim
I then turned around to see him approach two young boys behind us and give them the cards. He appears to be a missionary targeting children who are unaccompanied by adults.
the fact that he is giving the cards only to children & not to adults that is what looks suspicious.
We had Shluchim once who had goyim for neighbours. Nice friendly quiet people.
The shlucha once needed to gp out urgently & asked the 14 yr old daughter to babysit for a short while.
When cleaning her daughter’s bedside drawer for Pesach, she found a tselem tucked under her things….
Please can col ask Rabbi Hecht to explain this so that everyone can be educated as to their real intentions
Their ONLY aim is to take Yidden & convert them.
To make the staements you did in their defense comes from uneducated guesswork at best or ignorance.
Find out from people/Rabbonim/social workers who have to deal with the families of those who r/l have been lured into their poisonous web .
It sounds as if you have little regard for the Yiddidhe neshama Chas v shalom, the way you put it. I sm sure thst csnnot be.
May we merit Moshiach Now
Because, in crown heights- the rebbes shchuna- it is not common. On shlichus- where ever you live- it is expected.
So? I am on Shluchos and we get these people all the time
What makes Crown Heights so special that they have to be posted on news?
It’s the sad truth, but these people are everywhere, how come we don’t get cared for when these people knock on my Chabad House door and tell me bad stuff about Torah?
…..with these mechutzofim. Ask them to hand u all their pamphlets and then throw them away in the garbage!
You sound like AOC to me.
One could make a case for them being evil, what they do is very misleading and outright false. But morality isn’t based on intention for example the Nazis thought they were doing the right thing, morality is based on actions. Also think of their distortion of the golden rule “Do unto others” instead of “Don’t do unto others”.
It’s a free country. He has just as much right to be here as we do. #1, these people are NOT evil. On the contrary, they’re good, which is why we must be so vigilant about them. They’re motivated by exactly the same love that causes us to do mivtzo’im. They love us and want us to be saved and go to Heaven, and that’s why they’re doing this. If they hated us they would leave us alone and let us go to gehenom. This is why Yaacov had to take his children out of the influence of their loving… Read more »
To # 2 I couldn’t sleep last night wondering the same thing
How can someone like this be in the rebbe’s community?
These people are pure evil….it is imperative to know what is written on the cards…& that the boys not be left with them.
ALL parents should be educated about warning their children to avoid any contact with people handing out Any literature.
We need Moshisch Now
He was walking up Albany from Empire and he offered me and my son masks. We said no thank you, then he offered us literature – a missionary. Just letting you know.
