Dear friends,
15 years ago, my wife and I went to the Rebbe’s Ohel to ask for a Bracha for success in our plan to move on Shlichus to Bakersfield, a city in the desert of California and the ninth-most populous city in the state.
As we came out of the Ohel a video of the Rebbe was playing. The Rebbe was saying at a farbrengen:
“די גאנצע וועלט איז א מדבר און וואו א איד געפינט זיך אין א מדבר דארף ער מאכן פון אן ארץ לא זרוע צו א מקום זרוע”
“The whole world is a spiritual desert and where a Jew goes in the desert, he / she must make their place in the world from a barren desert, into a place of growth (spiritually).
We immediately saw this as a clear Bracha to start a Beis Chabad in Bakersfield, CA.

Because of the Rebbe’s foresight in recognizing the potential for abundant good in every single Jew and all mankind, Bakersfield has become another city where the sparks of kedusha have been extracted through Torah, Mitzvohs, Tahara and Sheva Mitzvohs Bnai Noach.
We ask your help to raise $400,000.00 towards our goal of $1.2 Million needed to purchase and renovate a fantastic building into a beautiful Jewish Community Center to accommodate our growing community and programs. Every dollar donated to our campaign will be quadrupled by two incredibly generous matchers, The Setton Foundation and Mr. Ira and Carole Cohen.
We Thank you for your generosity,
Rabbi Shmuli & Esther Schlanger
IF he puts his mind to it it comes to fruition!! Shmully I willnever forget your Melaveh Malka that Motzeh Shabbos we stayed by you.
…and it became worth $400.
Talk about good return on my money!
