Chabad of West Orange held their annual dinner on Memorial Day weekend, Sunday, May 28 – 3 Sivan, by honoring community leaders and veterans of the US military and the IDF.
Entitled “Stand Strong, Stand Proud—Celebrating our Heroes,” the gala dinner featured the stories of local Jewish veterans and Eilon Even-Esh, a former Captain in the US Marine Corps and veteran of the IDF (Staff Sergeant).
“I spent six years in the United States Coast Guard,” said community members Paul Newman told the Jewish Link. “It is very special and means a lot to me that my synagogue is recognizing Jewish Veterans.”
The concept’s potential was fulfilled, as the featured speakers inspired, moved and informed the audience of 210 with words of Torah and stories of bravery.
The dinner honored Harry and Abby Vine of North Caldwell and Charles and Dr. Rina Goldberg Hafner of West Orange for their significant contributions to Jewish life, religious institutions across the US and Israeli organizations.
In addition, Efrat Bunker of West Orange received the Chesed Award for her industrious volunteer activities.
“Chabad plays a very significant and meaningful role in my life,” said Charles Hafner said about the work of Shluchim Rabbi Mendy and Altie Kasowitz. “I hope you will join me in supporting their vital work in our community.”
