Yeshivas Lubavitch of Manchester, a Chabad Yeshiva which has educated hundreds of bochurim for the past 37 years, will not be opening next year, for the fall of 2019.
In the past year, the number of students had dwindled, but many hoped that the Yeshiva would still be able to open next year. After many meetings, the staff has decided not to open next year.
“After hanhola meetings over the past week, we have to unfortunately inform you that Yeshivas Lubavitch Manchester is on a sabbatical, due to the shortage of students,” Shalom Rice of the Yeshiva administration informed COLlive.
Yeshivas Lubavitch Manchester was founded by Rabbi Akiva Cohen and Rabbi Yitschok Klyne in 5742-1982, with the blessing and direction of the Rebbe.
The Yeshiva has been under the leadership of Rabbi Akiva Cohen, who was personally chosen by the Lubavitcher Rebbe to be Rosh Yeshiva. The yeshiva started with 10 students and has grown year on year.
The mashpiim at the Yeshiva are known to take an interest in each bochur, and have educated generations of students.
Mashpiim include Rabbi Moshe Wohlberg, Rabbi Berel Korf among others.
Nine years ago, I realised there was nothing left for me in Ohelei Torah so i set out to find a place to learn. There weren’t, and still aren’t that many options for a good lubavitcher boy to go to. But they broke down basically into two categories. The rule oriented strict boot camp regiments of a place like Brunoy and the more open and free-wheeling style of a place like Manchester. Given this choice and given my own disposition, i decided to head off to Yeshivas Lubavitch Manchester. The loss of this yeshiva is a massive loss for our… Read more »
has the yeshiva got less then 8 students that it started with? if it in fact has more then that, then the proof in itself is that it should stay open
Are you willing to cover or AtLeast help cover the deficit?!
I hope they will all be at good zal programs in the coming year, please Hashem!
Was a great Yeshiva. I hope it reopens stronger than ever.
My son went there and it was amazing! He grew and made him into a chassideshe bochur. Thank you to the mashpim and hanhalo.I hope that the yeshiva reopens with much hatzlacha.
Maybe they should teach Semicha?
Very sad to hear this as I was from the original 10 bochurim. There were many nisim at the beginning and Reb Avroham Jaffe would farbreng every year when was there at least to three years to celebrate this with me and the rest of the yeshiva. My son followed my footsteps and learnt there as well. My personal thanks to Reb Akiva and Reb Yitzchok for there dedication in those years. I must not forget the hanhala gashmi Shalom Weiss and many lay leader involved in those days including his wife cooking for the yeshiva and hosting the bochurim… Read more »
Intrested to know who where the 10 first bochurim of manchester yeshiva

What sabbatical?, think about it, is it easier to recruit new Bochurim while still operating, or after it has been closed for a year?
If members of the Hanhala are forced to leave to find Parnossah elsewhere, what exactly would the Yeshiva offer to potential Bochurim in a year’s time?
It is not just a shame for the Yeshiva and Anash but the calibre of the likes of Moshe Wolberg, Yitzchok Klyne, Berel Korf are hard to replace, Their presence is not only an advantage for Anash, but they add lustre and respect from the entire Manchester Kehilla!
In 1982 the leadership of Lubavitch Manchester, amongst them R’ Avrom Jaffe and R’ Sholom Weiss, was looking to take the organisation to a new level. They discussed introducing many different peulos and the idea was proposed to open a Yeshiva which would bring an added chayus to the community. When they wrote to the Rebbe about this, the Rebbe responded that as long as they have a minyan and a Rosh Yeshiva they have the Rebbe’s haskoma. They received many responses and hadrocha from the Rebbe over the years. They discovered the Rosh Hayeshiva, Rabbi Cohen, then living in… Read more »
Thanks for giving us the background. And I Agree, the Yeshiva is amazing and needs to be brought back
the Chofetz Chaim zt”l said, “the bochurim of Tomchei Tmimim give a chayos to all the other yeshivos”
