A man was arrested Sunday evening for attempting to forcibly enter the Shul of Bal Harbor, one of the largest synagogues in South Florida.
The man parked his car in front of the shul, sources said, and was approached by the Shul’s security members.
He was overheard speaking Arabic and appeared to be under the influence, a source said.
When approached by a security official, he began running towards the large building of The Shul located on Collins Avenue in Surfside.
Security was able to stop him. The man began to pray in Arabic as he was held by security as they waited for police, they said.
Police and ambulance arrived, and the street was closed off to traffic while police searched his vehicle.
They declared all to be safe.
“Security situation at The Shul tonight is resolved,” Bal Harbour Mayor Gabriel Groisman updated. “Thank you to the great work by the private security guards, and police dept’s who worked seamlessly together to keep everyone safe.”
The Mayor added: “The Jewish community remains undeterred and the synagogue will be open tomorrow.”
The Shul, founded in 1981 by Chabad Shliach Rabbi Sholom Ber Lipskar, is the center for Jewish activities for Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Indian Creek Village and Surfside and thousands of international tourists that visit or make South Florida their second home.
