The project of preparing the largest mezuzah in the CIS has been completed. The mezuzah was written by the leading sofer (scribe) of the National Scribal Center of Ukraine, Rabbi Reuven Margolin.
The mezuzah is 40 cm long, which is twice the size of the largest, standard mezuzah.
“This mezuzah was ordered by Chief Rabbi of Derbent Ovadiya Isaakov and it will be attached to the main door of the synagogue in Derbent, which will open in the near future,” explained Rabbi Margolin.
“It was an unusual order because of the size of the mezuzah; it is one of the largest in the world.”
Difficulties in creating a large mezuzah are related to the size of the parchment for writing the sacred text.
In addition, it is only possible to write on the parchment in a specific direction as the fibers of the hide interfere with the proper absorption of the special ink that is used by a sofer.
Even the composition of the ink used for this unique mezuzah was specially selected by Rabbi Margolin in order to ensure its proper absorption.
In the near future, this mezuzah will be presented to Rabbi Isaakov and will be affixed to the synagogue in the ancient city of Dagestan during its inauguration ceremony.
