The annual Labor Day festivities, which include the West Indian American Day parade and series of events, bring millions of visitors to the Crown Heights neighborhood.
It will take place in Crown Heights, with street closures beginning Sunday evening September 1, through Monday evening, September 2.
Anyone wishing to drive into Crown Heights streets, from Montgomery St. until President St., will need ID showing local address.
The NYPD will increase the police presence in the Crown Heights neighborhood for the next few days, in the lead up to and during the Labor Day events in the area.
Beginning on Thursday, Friday, and Shabbos, in the days leading up to the Labor Day weekend festivities, there will be an increased police presence in the area, Sergeant Mike Baratta of the NYPD 71st Precinct tells COLlive.com.
There will be massive police coverage in the area on Sunday and Monday, during the Labor Day annual celebration, he says.
On Sunday and Monday, there will be over 2,000 police officers deployed throughout the whole precinct and in the Crown Heights area, to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors in the neighborhood.
Expect heavy traffic delays from Sunday 10 pm to Monday 6 pm.

this parade needs to move somewhere else!
As with all other major city parades these are all done in the city. This parade shouldn’t be any different.
I know this subject has been spoken about multiple times before to no avail. Hopefully one day it will be moved to its proper location.
Agreed, together with the Simcha beis hashoava.
and it does not take up blocks and blocks and blocks from all over nor does it bring gun fights etc to the community
They can have their parade and we should also have the simchas beis hashoeva for blocks and blocks
Can we move it to Williamsburg?
They would never allow it
THE ARTICLE IS A LIE
YOU CANNOT GET INTO CROWN HEIGHTS MONDAY PERIOD
ALL ACCES ROADS ARE CLOSED .. THEY WONT ALLOW U IN WITH ID ETC ETC
YOU WILL GET STUCK FOR HOURS DRIVING AROUND AND GETTING INTO A ARGUMENT WITH POLICE OFFICERS IF YOU TRY
ALL THE OFFICERS ARE FROM OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS THEY WONT KNOW WHERE MONTGOMERY STREET IS OR KINGSTON AVE
MY ADVICE STAY HOME AS A PRISONER …
🙁
Do yourself a favor and leave the city for a day.
If you leave, leave early and don’t expect to get back in before 8PM at the earliest!
ok thank you for the update
For so many years 5 decades at least, it’s been this way “dafke” purposely done in the Jewish area.
I’m very surprised that we as Lubavitcher Chasidim allow it, i don’t want to bring this in but…….. How did the Rebbe feel about this?
I was always wondering.
My suggestion is, for this year the people who are involved with the local community/council should put their foot down. For next year.
And it should be suggested.
But on the other hand I really don’t know what goes on behind scenes.
The rebbe said nothing about it,
Use a little bit of brain and you’ll know what the right thing to do is
Crown Heights is not just a “Jewish area” as you describe it. We Yidden are maybe 50% of Crown Heights residents, if even that much. So to be fair, the parade is organized by Caribbeans — and they are most of the non-Jewish population in Crown Heights. Plus Caribbeans are numerous in the adjacent neighborhoods. Like I said, I want for this parade to go somewhere else. But if you want to live in a “Jewish area,” you’ll find that in certain other places — Eretz Yisrael, Lakewood, Williamsburg, etc. — but Crown Heights is different among the places where… Read more »
We have our events not just on Simchas Bais Hashoeva but Eastern Pkwy is closed off several times a year. This is for one day. Yes its inconvenient but its not fair that we do not live in a bubble and do need to respect other peoples cultures. Yes it is noisy, yes it can be violent has vshalom, unfortunately but again we need to live and let live. If we do our events and close off main streets to the public, it is not fair to say the other parts of our community can not. The NYPD covers the entire… Read more »
we have less thne 1% of west indins in CH… interesting right?
This is place for a crime
Crown heights is such an amazing cultural melting pot with vigorous celebration of the unique practices of all its inhabitants. I miss living there.
Yes, we have many streets blocked off, but that’s only for
several hours in the daytime, just one time. Yes, you block off fewer streets,
but you go on all night into the wee hours, and you do that for
several nights.
Everybody call the 71st police precinct and ask if 770 will be sufficiently blocked off and guarded.
Fence around 770 now
Especially this year with everything going on they should have a lot of police in front of 770.
I would say to even call in the national Guard
All these comments just go to show how stuck most of crown heights is. It’s one day where another real culture (yes, believe it or not jews aren’t the only existing peoples) celebrates their holiday. Even though yes, it may get wild. But to be fair have you seen how some people act on sukkos I’ve seen bochurim get arrested too. At the end of the day you just need to deflate your ego a little bit and accept that you’re going to be stuck with your wife for the day. Lechaim.
Outsider here. Non Crown Heights person. Isn’t this the parade where someone gets shot every single year?
Only one someone? Many shootings, and at least a murder each year.
If you work in Brooklyn crown height is it safe to walk around tomorrow? I am just checking because I might have to go to work tomorrow and I don’t know what time I start my day and finish my day and what is it starting from my words and ending from
And is it gonna be very safe to go to services in the morning in the evening in the afternoons?
Why do police need to protect citizens when it’s “just a wonderful ethnic parade etc” why? Perhaps because this ethnicity is prone to crime?
You do know there is a police presence during most parades?
There is always crime, parade or no parade. So, does the
parade bring more crime than usual?
Do your math
Yes, I stand to be corrected.
The community should be aware that the anti-Israel group “Within Our Lifetime” plans a “National March” in Union Sq in Manhattan which starts at 12 pm, Sept 2. Additionally, the West Indian Day Parade ends at Grand Army Plaza at approximately 6pm. The NYPD will also be using drones to monitor the activities. However, there exists the possibility that some Palestinian protestors could try to use the West Indian Day Parade as an opportunity to come to Crown Heights to provoke a situation for propaganda purposes. I have emailed several police officers at the 71st precinct about this concern last… Read more »
