A Jewish man who was punched in the face in an unprovoked attack in Crown Heights Thursday was able to get the better of his attacker.
At 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, a male member of the Crown Heights Jewish community was walking near 617 Brooklyn Avenue when he was approached by 2 black males who asked him for the time.
The Jewish male took out his cell phone and told them the time, and while he was putting the phone back in his pocket one of the black males punched him in the face “for unknown reasons,” police said.
The Jewish man was able to apprehend one of the suspects, who was arrested and brought to the 71st Precinct.
The NYPD is currently investigating the crime as a possible hate crime incident, a police source said.
Why are you all fighting we are all jews, be normal and menchlich and dont fight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i didnt mean to write those letters it was by mistake
i agree with #3
Publish the hero’s name and picture. You are awesome, man!
Excuse me!
If a person is attacked they have every legal right to defend themselves and if safe to do so they are legally entitled to perform a citizens arrest and hold the criminal for police!
As for the Halacha regarding such activities..
There is zero laws prohibiting a victim from acting in the interest of their own safety , furthermore this man performed a great Mitzvah by potentially saving other innocent people from becoming victims!
We are not living in the 1930’s!
We are not ghetto Jews !
We will not live in fear!
NEVER AGAIN MEANS NEVER!!!!!
To number 3…source of what you are saying comes from the introduction to kapitel 7 in tehillim. One ought not be happy but this action towards an unprovoked attack, had to be done.
Use this reply for every single interaction on the street.
# 21 you are blaming the victim? He was attacked and singled out by these this who were looking to cause trouble. They would have found any excuse to approach the victim, who by the way he was not walking but working. He was on a forklift at his job when he was attacked. COL you should really get the facts and do some research before reporting
As all the ills of our time, this unfortunate incident only has happened because of our over-dependence on cell phone. This Jewish Crown Height resident should have looked at his watch while keeping an eye on the thugs.
Hashem may not like it when we rejoice when one of His creations are in despair but in this case a Jew was being attacked so its a good thing he was able to fight off his attackers.
Don’t think we don’t realize that “GMCD” stands for GeMillas ChasaDim- u titled urself that way cuz ur being nice to #3 and defending him from the others.
😉
I agree with post #3
i think its about time that yeshivas should dedicate one hour a day towards teaching the bachurim self defense. It’s a matter of pikuach nefesh and bifrat the rebbes kinder.
THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME BY FAR. DURING THE DAYS OF THE MACCABEES ( THE FIRST SHEMIRAH PATROL ANYWHERE ) IN THE LATE 60’S OF WHICH R” SHMUEL SCHRAGE A”H WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDERS, THERE WAS PLENTY OF DEFENSIVE ACTION, AND DURING THE RIOTS OF 1991 THERE WAS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF NOT ONLY DEFENSIVE ACTION ,BUT QUITE A BIT OF OFFENSIVE ACTION ALSO.DURING THE LATE 50’S AND EARLY 60’S THERE WAS QUITE A BIT OF DEFENSIVE RETALIATION BETWEEN THE “ETNIC ” STUDENTS OF PS61 ( PUBLIC SCHOOL ON CROWN NEXT TO BAIS RIVKAH WHICH AT THAT TIME… Read more »
get self defence lesoons!!! Women and Men and young adults!! DO NOT LET ANYONE SCARE U! DEFEND YOURSELVES! I think the police should also learn how yo defend themselves from these evil animals instead of looking away and pretending they see nothing!!
He should’ve broke every bone in his body so the next thug thinks twice
No #12, they were not upset about whether or not he told them the time quickly enough. They didn’t need to know the time. This is their way of engaging with and attacking Jews- asking the time (or in the past asking for a light). This is the first time, the very first – that I hear of a Jew in Crown Heights fighting back. If it could be done more often- either by the victim when possible, OR by bystanders these animals would stop choosing Jews as easy prey.
maybe he was upset that it took him to long to respond what time it was?
Commenters #7 and #8 are correct. Here’s a relevant bit of Gemara (Megillah 16a), paraphrased:
Haman had to prostrate himself for Mordechai to climb up on him to get on the king’s horse. As Mordechai was climbing up, he kicked Haman, who said, “Doesn’t your Torah say that you shouldn’t be happy when your enemy falls?” To which Mordechai replied, “That is talking about Jews. For your kind, we are told that we Jews will tread on our arrogant enemies.”
He was probrably trying to rob him, so the guy thought he would knock him out and take his cell phone, good for the guy that was able to apprehend him and call the police
my source is the torah i dont know exactly were
WHERE ARE YOU SOURCING YOUR LUDICROUS STATEMENT? DID YOU NOT HEAR OF AMALEK, HITLER,ETC.
WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. AND TO # 4-CAN YOU THINK OF ANOTHER MOTIVE FOR UNPROVOKED ASSAULT ?
to # 3, can you quote a specific sefer that talks about an “arrest”? what do you think we do in Purim? and besides, who was destroyed here?
Because randomly punching people in the face isn’t a robbery
ואמרת בלבבך כחי ועוצם ידי עשה לי את החיל הזה?! וזכרת את ה’ אלקיך כי הוא הנותן לך כח לעשות חיל!
don’t mean to be rude,,, just a question, why is everything called or tried to be considered a hate crime,,
its an old trick asking someone for the time,,, seeing his cell. looks good.. like an I-Phone, hell yeah grab it,,, a blatant robbery.. be safe out there
the torah says that you shouldnt behappy when one of hashems creations are destroyed or in this case arested
Unfortunately, the cops or judge won’t do much.
Jews prevail 😉
