Hundreds showed up to a counter-protest in Boro Park Thursday, in support of Council Member Kalman Yeger.
Anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour was said to have been planning to attend a protest in front of Council Member Yeger’s office in Borough Park on Thursday afternoon, to protest a tweet by Yeger which caused a stir on Wednesday.
Sarsour was not seen at the protest, in which hundreds of pro-Israel demonstrators showed up amidst a small crowd of pro-Palestinians.
Shouts of “Yisrael” were heard from the crowd, drowning out the small group chanting “Palestine.”
Yeger has been receiving backlash after a tweet declaring Palestine doesn’t exist, in response to anti-Semitic comments made by Ilhan Omar.
“Palestine does not exist,” tweeted Yeger, who represents Midwood and other neighborhoods with large Jewish populations.
“There, I said it again. Also, Congresswoman Omar is an anti-Semite. Said that, too. Thanks for following me.”
Yeger received backlash from many elected officials on Twitter, and his fellow councilmen called for his removal from the city’s immigration committee.
Dov Hikind called for the Jewish community to come out in force to defend Councilman Yeger, and join a counter protest at Yeger’s office in Boro Park on Thursday.
“We will not sit idly by as sinister anti-semite par excellence Linda Sarsour attempts to roll over Kalman Yeger for his speaking of historical facts. It’s nothing but an attempt to silence a Jewish politician. We won’t allow it,” Hikind tweeted.
Chanina Sperlin of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council urged Crown Heights residents to attend the counter protest today, and show support for the councilman, “who should certainly not apologize for his statements,” Sperlin said.
“Today they are protesting in Borough Park, tomorrow it could be Crown Heights, we should all show support,” he said.
Brooklyn is home to one of largest Palestinian communities. It’s irresponsible & dangerous to engage in this blatant bigotry. I’m Palestinian, I exist & so does my community. Yeger needs to be removed from the Immigration Committee & apologize publicly to Palestinian New Yorkers. https://t.co/lFupO3prwd
