The recent EnerJew Shabbaton took place in Kharkov, Ukraine, for Jewish teenagers from countries in the former Soviet Union.
The weekend included a Bar Mitzvah celebration for one of the participants, David Turov, a student at Chabad’s Yeshiva Ketana in Kharkov run by Rabbi Levi Raices.
On Sunday, he returned home with his suitcase and his new Tefillin bag that he received as a gift from the Chabad Shluchim.
Walking alone late at night, he was startled by man holding a gun at him. The man demanded that the boy give him his money and valuables.
Shocked, the boy looked up to the sky, praying for help. It was then that the yarmulka that he received during the Shabbaton fell off his head and landed on the ground.
“You’re Jewish?” the thief asked.
“Yes,” the boy answered. “Just yesterday was my Bar Mitzvah. I’m Jewish and my mother Jewish.”
A moment passed and then the thief responded, “I’m also Jewish. My mother is Jewish too. I’ll give you a gift for your Bar Mitzvah and leave you alone. Go home…”
