A Shliach who visited Crown Heights Sunday is warning of a scam that was done to him in the neighborhood while shopping on Kingston Avenue.
“As I was getting ready to checkout from Chocolatte, an individual in front of me in line asked if he can cashapp me so I can pay for his order,” he says.
The Shliach says the person borrowed his phone, “to enter his cashapp name so I can send him a request for the funds,” he says.
But when the Shliach checked his phone, he discovered that “while doing so, he conveniently sent himself $90.”
Having the name of the person, the victim tracked down the thief’s name on Facebook and messaged him about the funds.
“It was a back and forth…” he says. “After I confirmed with someone else that he’s done this to people before, I confronted him and threatened to publicize him and his actions.”
“He then admitted to his ‘past’ behaviors and agreed to pay me back for this ‘mistake,'” he says.
The Shliach said he’s turning to COLlive.com so “Readers should be aware and cautious when asked to allow people to use their phones.”
