What do you get when you mix hundreds of girls, hundreds of cans, the holiday of Chanukah and a whole lot of effort?
The widest can menorah Beis Rivka has ever seen!
It all started when the Beis Rivka Elementary School G.O. realized that they had to rev up the school Chanukah spirit.
“We wanted to do something that would make a difference,” said one of the organizers, “and we figured tzedaka would be the best way to go about it.”
The girls liked the idea of collecting food for the hungry, but they wanted to somehow tie the idea into Chanukah, so they decided to build a menorah out of donated items.
They put up fliers around the school to encourage students to bring in cans. They went around to the classrooms, and put all their efforts into making it a success. It worked. By the time Chanukah arrived, a beautiful Menorah was built on the stage in the Beis Rivka lunchroom.
“It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it!” one said.
The girls told Ahavas Chesed, an organization that gives free meals to those less fortunate, about the hundreds of cans they collected. Ahavas Chesed had someone pick up the crates of cans, and later that night, the girls of G.O. went and helped distribute them.
“One thing is for sure,” said a proud parent, “I won’t forget this Chanukah any time soon. When I think about it, I can’t help admiring the students who go to Beis Rivka; they lugged so many cans to school, it’s astonishing! The whole school worked together to accomplish this great mitzvah!”
