The girls of the Jewish Creative Arts drama club have been busy at work for the past few months working on their teamwork, improvisational skills, and tapping into their creativity and imagination while rehearsing for their original Purim musical which will take place Sunday evening in Crown Heights.
Naomi Levin-Morris, who started the drama groups five years ago with six girls in a small room of a friend’s home and watched it grow to close to fifty students over the years, claims it’s all about the process.
“The goal of our shows are not to create that perfect ‘Broadway’ style performance,” says Levin-Morris. “The point is to create an atmosphere where the kids feel safe to explore more uninhibited and vulnerable parts of themselves. We try to work on the deepest parts of ourselves in the sessions, but we also embrace our imperfections and mistakes. Our differences are what makes us unique.”
Each session is filled with fun and laughs, without any judgments or labels that other social activities may create. Most of all, the drama club is a place where each child, no matter what they’re like at home or in school, can truly shine and be a star in their own way.
The show will take place Sunday, February 17 at Chevra Ahavas Yisroel, 306 Albany Ave.
First showing: 6:00 pm
Second showing: 7:15 pm
